Hi,
I have a 71 Chevelle with a stock 454 out of a 79 1/2 ton suburban and would like some advice. My car has 273 gears turbo 400 transmission with headers. I have another set of heads casting #215, an edelbrock C396 intake and a 3310 Holley carb. What if not all of these parts should I use. I know I need more gear, but how much more? The car is a daily driver but would like to run a respectable number at the track. Any and all help would be appreciated.

I would use all those parts. Add some cam while at it (something like a 226/236 split pattern on 112LSA) and get at least some 3.31's in there. This will get you into the low 13's / high 12's with tuning and traction. Look up MR4speed, he has a similiar combo.

Dan,
the 215 heads, intake and carb would be a great upgrade for your 454
I recently took a stock 1973 unopened 130,000 mile 454 and added a pair of #215 heads along with a mild cam.In a 1980 Malibu,it ran mid 13's @ 102 MPH thru a puny 2.25" exhaust with NO tuning and 3.42 gears.

What cam did you run in your Malibu and what would you suggest for my combination?

We ran the Summit brand 228/238 .540/.540 114 LSA
It would have done better at the track with an RPM intake (it had a peanut port Performer intake) and a bigger exhaust (has a 2.25" exhaust)

All things considered, mid 13's @ 102 MPH was cool by me.
It runs and feels strong on the street, thats for sure.
This is actually my friends Malibu, but I put the motor together with him and I sold him my old heads and picked out the cam.
