: 1973 Chevy Chevelle SS? project car
vintageozarks Mar 7th, 07, 7:30 AM  I have searched the internet vin and cowl tag sites trying to find out if this car is a true SS and can't get any info. Those sites just skip over 1973 as far as VIN # go. I thought this might be the best place to ask for help. I posted a photo of it below. The VIN is 1D37 H3 K 580831 Cowl Tag: ST 73 1AD37 K BDY:215904 there is also a LS at the bottom of the tag. Hope someone can help. P.S. I am Larry's wife, Larry is a member. It's real early in the morning and he's still :boring: Our email is: larry@vintageozarks.com

oldtimebaseballfan Mar 7th, 07, 8:17 AM Hello Larry's wife. Your car came with a 350 2bbl. Chances are it is not an SS.
There are no signs of SS on the exterior. Check the interior for SS emblems.
If the interior is original, maybe the Build Sheet is under or behind one of the seats. Good luck.
1969 Chevelle Dude Mar 7th, 07, 8:46 AM Welcome
vintageozarks Mar 7th, 07, 1:16 PM HE has all the exterior script in the trunk. he says the script is for an SS but we didn't know if it is the original script or not. Does anyone know what the "LS" on the Cowl tag means for a '73?
I don't know how to I.D. one from the tag, but you should look for the following things:
Blacked out grille
Black accents on the taillight bezels
350 2-barrel single exhaust V8 or larger (all larger engine had dual exhausts)
454s were available in non-SS Chevelles in 73, 74, and also 75 except California.
I assume Power Brakes (manual disk brakes standard on all ‘73-up Chevelles, power was standard with a/c and / or a 454; traditionally the Chevelle SS got Power front disk brakes since ’69 while manual drums were standard on the rest)
Rear stabilizer bar
Oval gauge pods (could have idiot lights in them or functional gauges); no sweep speedos!
Dual Sport (bullet) Mirrors, driver’s side remote controlled, RHS manual.
SS emblem on the standard 2-spoke steering wheel (optional 4-spoke had Chevy emblem)
Bench or swivel buckets were offered
No 3-speed manual versions (hardly any of those on any Chevelles by then anyway)
Stock wheels were 14x7 Rally Wheels with 6-slots, 14x7 Turbine 1 wheels optional
Original tires were G70-14 white-lettered bias-ply only; Firestone, Goodyear, Uniroyal, Goodrich, General were all valid OEM.
They came with striping around the wheelwells, lower doors and rockers. No rocker molding or wheel opening moldings were used.
SS emblem in grille, front fenders, rear-end panel between the taillights. Since the body emblems were glued on starting with the ’73 Chevelles, looking for emblem holes on the body is pointless.
You could still get manual steering in Chevelles that year unless it was 454 powered. You never see manual steering in any Chevelle from that generation unless it has a six though.
vintageozarks Mar 7th, 07, 4:38 PM Thank you Cam for that excellent information. Here is a photo of the steering wheel and dash in this 1973 Chevelle (SS?). What is your opinion based on this information. Susan

That's the SS dash.
I'd say since it has swivel buckets and the console that it is an SS.
How many miles and what's the asking price?
redfox Mar 7th, 07, 6:37 PM Hello and welcome. :beers:
vintageozarks Mar 7th, 07, 8:59 PM $3000 is the price we want for it. It's located in Macks Creek, MO which is about 15 miles from Lake of the Ozarks, MO.
novaderrik Mar 9th, 07, 3:56 AM it's kind of hard to tell from the pic, but what color is that interior?
vintageozarks Mar 9th, 07, 11:57 AM The interior is black. The cowl tag states the exterior is supposed to be blue but it isn't.
dragos Mar 11th, 07, 8:40 PM According to the VIN, you have: 1=Chevrolet, D=Chevelle Malibu, 37=2-door Sports Coupe, H=350cid engine, 3=1973, K=assembled in Leeds, Missouri, and the 580831=production sequence number. You probably already know that!
What you really need is the build sheet, with the Z15 (SS equipment) code on it as OLDTIMEBASEBALLFAN mentioned. Also CAM listed the SS equipment pretty accurately, but these cars can be cloned. Well, that's my two cents. Good luck with it!!
vintageozarks Mar 11th, 07, 11:30 PM Thank all of you for your help. We'll check under the seats and all over for build sheet. The thing that bothers me is that according to the cowl tag this car was blue with a black interior. The interior is black but the outside sure isn't blue. Susan
vintageozarks Mar 11th, 07, 11:35 PM I made a mistake. The body cowl tag on this car does not have the 2626 code. That is the original color of this car. I apologize. I got it mixed up with another Malibu and it is blue. Ugggh! I'll never hear the end of this one. susan
