Anybody tried the 7,8, 0r 9 inch brake boosters. My stock 11" needs to be replaced and since I run tall valve covers I figured on changing to a smaller size.

I am wondering if the dual 7" or dual 8" has as much stopping power as the 11". I know some guys are running the 9", how do they compare?

Here's the one I'm looking at.

James, I wouldn't go smaller unless the booster has a dual diaphram. You may not like the stopping power with the smaller unit. We went down this road on another project, ended up going with a hydra boost system just to clear the valve covers. (not on a Chevelle or El Camino)

I bought a polished stainless steel dual diaphram 7 inch booster from rodpartsdealer off ebay... I made a lot of changes to the brakes... AFX spindles and C5 brakes with a CPP adjustable master ... Its stops great good; feedback I think... my only issue is loss of pedal at idle but thats and engine vacuume issue (i think)...

Classic Performance offers good products. I bought mine through them on an ebay listing.

I decided I didn't want the look of the smaller booster, but my tall Edelbrock Elite covers (that I bought to clear my roller rockers) hit the 11 inch booster. I found that the tall Moroso covers, like these...

... cleared my rockers and the booster perfectly!

I have a Big Block 70.

The 9" dual diaphragm OEM style that they show is what I'm running in the Firebird. Originally came out of an '81 Turbo T/A, along with the rear disc setup I'm using. It's off the car right now for a cosmetic workover. I might just call these guys, get a new one, since most everything you buy at the parts stores these days aren't cad plated. Thanks for the link, Don.

Thanks for the info guys!!! :beers:

Hey Rich, how did the stainless unit you bought mount? Does it fit the stock bracket or did you have to make one, and does a stock master cylinder fit it?

Thanks again !!!

I bouhgt some chrome summit brackets.. $30 if I remember.. A stock Master Cylinder will work.. it actually has an adjustable pin to take up some slack between it and the MC... There are different MCs and the one I got was a deep bore for non power assist but included a pin to fill the bore if you were using a booster... dual purpose you might say...

A note on the Summit brackets.. I bought the angled ones and now my MC tilts too far back. (the fluid fills and over flows in the back before the front resevoir is only half full) I ordered a set of straigt brackets but havent put them on yet. It would require rebending two new lines from the MC down. It interfears with the inner wheel wells...

You're welcome Darren! I had an email conversation and phone conversation with them. Very nice and very knowledgeable.

The plating process they use is VERY nice too!
