Heres what I've got. I was stripping the rear up-right panel(were the SS emblem is) on the back of my 67SS when I got down to bare metal on the drivers side I came across two holes in it which looks like were the Chevelle Emblem goes for a Malibu or other models. Would this be right that Chevy used one panel that had all the holes punched in for all the models or was this replaced sometime in this cars life time? Any ideas on this one.

Thanks Tom

I would say that an emblem had been removed and the holes filled. I dont believe the holes were punched for the panels ahead of time, just because different models used different emblems. Can you see the holes from inside the trunk area? Do they look drilled or punched? Drilled holes would be from someone other than GM. Maybe the panel was replaced with one from another car?

They look to be drilled, (cone shape with a small hole maybe 1/16th) they are inline with each other. After reading your responce something hit me http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif I think???? that the hole maybe from the dealership. What I mean is that they may have drilled the holes for there name tag that they put on the cars they sell?? I first thought that there was a Chevelle emblem along with the SS emblem that would go on the back, but if I remember right on an SS that all there was, was the SS emblem.

Thanks Tom

For what it's worth, I have a NOS driver quarter for 66/67 and there are no holes in it at all. My NOS fenders for 66 had no holes except for the wheel well opening molding.

I would say they were punched as needed only.

Madmax,
I bet you figured it out, lots of older dealer emblems were stuck on with speed nuts or studs with metal plugs. Dont you wish someone could of thought of using two sided tape back then?

Speaking of dealer advertising logos on the trunk. Back in 1970 when I ordered my Chevelle, I told the dealer that I better not see his logo on the back of my car when I came to pick it up. He looked at me and told me that it was common practice to do that. I told him that I would let him do it under one condition...he'd have to sign a contract with me, paying me a fee to advertise his dealership! Six weeks later, when I came to pick up my new Chevelle, there was no ugly sticker on my trunk! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif Boy, over the last 30 years I could have made a bundle! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

MADMAX,
I suspect that you guessed correctly on the holes being from a dealer emblem. You said that the holes were on the driver's side. I'm quite sure that the "Chevelle" emblem on a Malibu was on the passenger side.
