: SS Stripes
67 Bowtie Aug 17th, 04, 10:02 PM Hey guy's,
Can someone please tell me the width of the factory stripes on a 67 ss chevele, and how far apart they should be graemlins/clonk.gif My car is ready for paint, and were not sure about the width and space between the stripes. If possible, could someone respond as soon as possible.
Thanks for your help graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Brett
67shovel Aug 18th, 04, 8:44 AM 67's didn't come with duel deck stripes. Not until 1970 did they get the stripes from the factory. All 67 had was an optional lower body stripe. You can paint stripes on it if you want but it might look a little funny on the factory SS hood with the chrome inserts. I don't know the stripe spacing off hand but I guess you copy 1970 stripes.
thunderstruck507 Aug 18th, 04, 11:36 AM I personally wouldn't put the large stripes on. For some reason they seem out of place on pre-70 cars and even on 70 up malibus.
I really hate to see them on 69s, the side stripe fit the body more cause if you notice the windows, grille extensions, and nose were all pointed...so the side stripe with the pointed tip is very natural for the car.
It also highlights the body contours.
I think pre 68s had a body style that was so classy and clean on their own they look best in lighter colors with no stripes at all. My fave for the earlier bodies are white and the powder blue metallic
66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Aug 18th, 04, 11:47 AM I believe the 67 AIM will give you the information. Colors: white, red, and light blue
I also don't see where the question indicates he wants to put stripes anywhere other than where they belong on a 67 Chevelle
Herb Aug 18th, 04, 11:49 AM Do you mean these stripes?

They can be purchased from several of the suppliers normally mentioned here including the sponsor of this site.
Bill Rose Aug 18th, 04, 11:57 AM I say put the 70 SS stripes on Mike's 66. I think it would be that final touch we're all striving for. tongue.gif tongue.gif
I'll bring the paint and a brush....

I think you miss the point, no offense... he DOES want to stripe it, he is not asking if he should or if he can....and the car is a 67, not a 70, not a 69, but a 67.. and they did come with an optional stripe on the bottom side of the car, we are not talking about the merits of striping a car that didn't have stripes or putting them on a deck lid or hood.... his question was very specific.. he wants to know the size and location/measurements of the stripes for his car. If he owns a 67, he should also buy a 67 AIM, all of the information about the car is in there.
and Mr. Rose....That paint brush works on 68's too tongue.gif

We've got a generic '70 Malibu that has a GM cowl-induction (w/ flapper) and you better believe it's gonna be striped. Not going for the fake-SS, I think that's bush-league, but if one wants to customize their own car to their own personal taste, why not?
On the other hand, a rare or unique car has a certain moral obligation to uphold the originality. Like putting candied purple paint and a wing on a COPO... even if you're in love witht he look, it just ain't right! graemlins/thumbsup.gif If it has the SS hood it makes a difference to me. My car was striped when I bought it and with the flat hood it just didn't look right to me. And noone said he couldn't paint it however he wants...I was just giving my opinion on the aesthetics of it :D
I wouldn't say its ones job to keep a rare car original either...would make more sense to sell it and get a less valuable car to customize but I don't get caught up in originality enough to care what anyone does to their car.

67 Bowtie Aug 19th, 04, 2:16 AM Hello again,
Sorry it took me so long to get back on, I had to work all day :( anyway, 66 Mystery Chevelle is on the same page as myself graemlins/thumbsup.gif What I needed to know was the width of the 2 stripes that follow just above the bottom line on a 1967 SS Chevelle, and how far apart they are from each other. My car is not an ss, I just like the way the stripes look  If you want to see a good example of the stripes go to www.jakesforgottenpast.com (http://www.jakesforgottenpast.com) and look at the black 67 ss. it's a work of art :D
Thanks for all of you replies
Brett,
67shovel Aug 20th, 04, 9:05 AM Brett,
I misunderstood your question. I have those stripes on my 67 SS. Most Chevelle suppliers sell the decal kit to do it for around $100.

Can't say that here :(
email YenkoChevelle69 if you want to know what he said

I don't know anything about that particular business, but how do I know if he didn't do everything possible to please you. In Dad's shop we occasionally get the customer who thinks the bill should be half what it is, no matter what the bill is. How do I know you're not that guy??? Again, no offense, but you should elaborate when bashing this guy, not just post accusations w/o an example.

don't feel bad, sometimes I read to fast too smile.gif
YenkoChevelle69 Aug 22nd, 04, 10:37 PM Dean, what's wrong with me sharing my experiences with a dealer that happens to be brought up in a post? It's done all the time in bench racing?

You know the drill about our bashing policy, right?
YenkoChevelle69 Aug 23rd, 04, 1:22 PM Yeah, well he is. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Respectively. smile.gif
CC67 Aug 23rd, 04, 1:58 PM Speaking of 67 SS stripes, weren't the smaller (narrower) set of stripes standard equipment on the SS 396, and the larger stripes, that also went above the wheel opening, optional? Maybe someone here can confirm this. My SS still has its original blue stripes (small version - car is Ermine white with bright blue interior). Does anyone else here have one with blue stripes?
Herb Aug 23rd, 04, 2:56 PM CC67, pictures would be nice. I still have my paint and stripes to do. Is there someplace I can see your car?
66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Aug 24th, 04, 9:33 AM Stripes over the wheel were optional., the other may have been part of the SS pkg., I'd have to look in my library to be positive. Dale may have something to add also.

plain 69 Aug 24th, 04, 9:42 AM For some reason or another I run into people who think the 70-72 stripes are called SS stripes. These people are usually the ones that see the 70-72 stripes on any Chevelle and say they are SS stripes.
Were the 69 side stripes that were optional on the SS available on all Malibu's as well? I know I have seen a couple COPO cars with them. Talking about the wide stripe in center with two small ones on the outside from fender to the tail light housing.
66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Aug 24th, 04, 11:43 AM nevermind... edit.
