I bought a quart of primer last week to spray the car after the paint is stripped and sanded (just a temporary coating). I noticed that the label says "Laquer base" primer. I assume this is NOT what I want to spray on my car considering that I will be applying a 2 part urethane primer later on after body work and before the base coat/clear coat final paint.
Should I avoid using this quart of primer and if so what kind should I use for now just to seal and prevent rust before body work ?? Specifics please. TIA ;)

I've used Dupont/Nason laquer primer/surfacer before with single stage urethane topcoat (Glasurit 22) but I did seal it before the topcoat.I've done this twice with no problems.

Check with your paint supplier. They can tell you if the primer you're using needs a sealer before you cover it or if it needs to be sanded off first. I use rattle cans to cover small areas on occation but I take the time to sand it all off before I spray on my etch and high built. I have not used the appoxy primer yet so I can't tell you anything about it
MartinSR or Eric, you guys out there and can feild this?

I feel the same way about lacquer products as I do bias ply tires, they are OUT DATED.
I know you want it for a temp coat but still lacquer?!?! Lacquer will NOT hold back the elements like the new stuff will, plus it would be a terrible base for uretahne products.
This thing going to sit outside or inside a nice shop? That makes a HUGE difference. If the thing is gonna sit out then no DOUBT would I apply some epoxy primer on the metal. Epoxy is the best product agaisnt the elements, but in time it will break down due to the UV rays from the sun as epoxy as no UV protection.
If inside will you can just etch the car with like PPG dx1791. Ive got stuff covered with 1791 showing NO signs of rust even after 5-6 years, but thats inside in a dry shop. Once I finally get to those parts Ill bead blast them to bare metal again and go from there. Althou with dx1791 you can scuff, reshoot and apply sealer, primer surfacer
Also we talking the WHOLE ENTIRE car or just spots there and here?
Basically Id dump the lacquer in the circular file, plain and simple...Eric

Basically Id dump the lacquer in the circular file, plain and simple...Eric I will dump the quart of laquer base primer and use the 2 part urethane that I bought from Sherwin Williams last year. This will be covering the whole car. I will talk to my PPG supplier first, before I do anything to make sure though.
I did not notice the "laquer" on the quart primer can when I bought it and felt it was a mistake after I noticed it a week later.
Thanks for all the help guys graemlins/waving.gif
