Ive been getting ready to take my Icar welding certification test, so Ive been doing some practicing in the shop. Icar is known world wide short for Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair.

Anyway thought I would share some pics right out of the Icar text book of how a weld should look.

This first pic shows what a plug weld or spot should look like. Althou kinda hard to read it gives ya an idea.

This pics shows a butt weld with backing strip. Without backing strip the weld should still appear pretty close to this.

This is one that I made, using the stitch method, basically a bunch of tack welds connected. It was made in the Horizontal position

Same weld but pic of the backside, showing the peneration just like the Icar text book

This pic I took to show what welding in different lengths can do to the metal. Notice the welds go from short to long starting from left to right. The shorter welds produce a smaller heat zone making for less warpage. If you look close the last one, you can see the warpage caused from the long welding length.

This pic show a welding fixture that i made to help me with the different welding positions needed to pass the test. I can move it up or down and even turn it 360 degrees. I have roughly 6 bucks invested in this fixture. It would be a great welding tool for anyone wanting to learn.

This is how a plug weld should look after going thro a destructive test, the bottom item. Since a PROPER weld is stronger then the surrounding metal the weld shouldnt rip or tear. The base metal should destruct before the weld. Notice that the base metal pulled away from the bottom of the plug leaving a hole in the base metal, and the weld stayed in place.
To test a plug weld two pieces together at 90 degrees from each other as shown by the top item. Once cool place one end in a vice the other end grab with your hand and pull down.
If you look at the bottom weld notice the weld broke first instead of the base meta. This should be a BAD plug weld. This happens when you forget to turn on the the gas

The same goes for a butt weld, the base metal should destruct before the welded area.
Happy welding...Eric
