Anyone using ppg's NCP270/271 corrosion resistant primer? It appears that this primer is good at keeping moisture away from the substrate your painting it on. Must not absorb moisture like a 2k primer? I'm just theorizing on this, am I correct in assuming this? It doesn't appear to be an epoxy product! Does anyone have any experience with this product and/or some technical info on what makes this corrosion resistant? Thanks, Mike

this was just discussed recently, it is supposed to be the same as ppg dtm line, but much cheaper. Its a all in one product they say. If you are not applying over bare metal just use polyester primer, its only 50.00 a gal. and works great. I went with the epoxy over the bare metal which a lot of guys dont like here. Talk with your paint store and see what they have to say also. heres a link to ppg' website on product info and compare the products, it will tell you whats compatible and whats not, very helpful. If you dont see your product just do a search using their site. http://www.ppg.com/cr-refinish/phase1/frmProductInfo.asp

m22chevy, it is nothing magical. It IS a 2K primer, it is just ISO free. It is not going to be better at moisture hold out than any other 2K (epoxy would be better). They call it direct to metal only in the sense that it has certain adhesion properties to not need an etch. Whether it does or doesn't is something you will have to ask the R&d department at PPG. Marketing has chosen to tell you that it is a DTM product. They must have a good reason, but it is not some magical product. I can say that I have seen it used in many shops with a success.

m22,

Today I asked the PPG rep about the ncp270 primer. This is what he told me, its pretty much the same thing as k36 but ISO free and has a few adhesion chemicals added to it to make it bond better to bare metal. The reason it says rust resist is because of the better metal bonding not because of some new chemical. He also said it has better fill then K36 and doesnt have as much shrinkage as k36.

Also in a prevoius post I mentioned that ncp270 and the DTM in the global line was the same product. After more talking with the rep it is not the same animal totally different, the DTM is an expoy based product were this not...Eric

Great information guys!! Iv'e got bare metal area's and area's with old but "sound" paint that need to be covered and blocked. Also a few area's that have some filler. Is this a good choice for use as a surfacer to be blocked out? ISO free is a big plus!! Thanks, Mike

Mike,

The 270 is a fine primer for priming over small spots of bare metal and is a good leveling and blocking primer. However, it does not have as good color holdout as the iso primers do. This meaning that your topcoat will retain more gloss and that glass-like appearance over the K36 and more preferably (in my opinion) K38.

On the other hand.....I am speaking from experiences seen in production situations where the primer is sprayed, sanded, and painted in the same day, next day at the longest. The longer ANY primer sits, the more it cures and hardens so that it will absorb the topcoat less. If this will be your situation, then the 270/271 is an excellent choice.

Intesting! I wonder how hard the DTM is to block since it's epoxy based.

Does it fill and sand as good as NCP 270?
