I still have to finish Downloading it, then I will upgrade my Xp Professional with Vista. Have seen the demo a few times on other computers, seems to be working alright. No major issues as of yet with those machines.

I have been using it for about 6 months now as a beta tester. In just the last 2 versions, it has become much more stable. It is a huge resource hog. Make sure you score well on the preparedness software you can donwload and run on your system from MS. I have found that the 2 most important parts for me are RAM, and Video. I like the system best at 2GB RAM, and make sure your video card meets the requirements, because the "aero" settings are worth using. Also be sure any software you need is compatible, because they probably will not work. In some instance I have seen old software break the system. Also if you can, perform a full install, not an upgrade. IE7 is now required, and has some compatability issues, especially with secure (https) websites. The new MS Office is also very different. It takes a few hours to get used to, but once it becomes more stable, it will be pretty nice. In short, good luck, I have seen installs go both ways, be prepared with good backups before you start, and know that the install takes much longer than XP.

Vista came installed on the new Dell computer I got last week. Works fine for me. Had to go to a web site to get an updated driver to allow my printer to work with Vista, but that was no big deal and the updates are free. If there are any compatibility issues or bugs I'm sure they're working on them, but I've haven't run into anything major.

I don't think you have any reason to upgrade from XP right now if you've been happy with it. If you're buying a new computer you might not have a choice, most will be shipping out with Vista as the new Windows platform. Getting the latest software updates is just part of life...

From what I have seen there is no compelling reason to switch from XP to vista. The driver support is not there yet and as stated above not all software is compatable.

I just got the business version as part of my MS Action Pack along with Office 2007. I currently have it set up as a second boot drive so I can play with it and keep my XP going. Updating drivers is typical, sound and video in my case on a 1 year old Dell and a very old UMAX scanner that has no driver update available but it's time for a new scanner anyway.

It's kinda neat and will take some learning curve. I like the 'previews' of programs open on the taskbar. Haven't seen a compelling reason to completely change over yet but that day will come.

I hooked up the net on a new computer that had Vista on it, looked like a lot of eye candy, but im sure you can customize it nicely. It ran very smooth and fast for the limited stuff I did on it, and it was only a Pentium D 2.8 gig if i recall right.

kw1162 is right, its a resourse hog big time. Personally I wouldnt get it without having 2 gigs of ram. And Id turn off any fancy settings that eat up video/ram/cpu because it just slows things down.

For me, I have no reason to upgrade till I get a DX10 video card.

ChaosEnvy, i know someone reciently that downloaded vista (a popular downloaded file too), and it was a fake, didnt work at all. Hopefully you dont have that issue.

maybe in a year it will be ready for the market, its still needs major patching and upgrading to be compatible and fix all the memory leaks etc.

I'm looking for a new PC right now, and it seems like a lot of them come with Vista as standard. And most of them come with only 1GB RAM. Just as when XP was introduced, and most PCs came with 256MB RAM. I can still remember how frustrating it was to have to upgrade a brand new PC just to make the OS run.

My major concern is if all the software and drivers I have will be compatible. From what I have heard, and read in this thread, the world is not ready for Vista quite yet... or maybe it's Vista that's not ready for the world?

So what's the major advantage with Vista anyway?

No nothing like that. Its a legal download. Since I am am finishing my masters or for that matter any computer science, MIS student at the university gets membership access the the Microsoft Academic Alliance. This gives me the ability to get free downloads or cd's if I pay S/H of any Windows OS, Sql Server, etc....
