: SS metalics that hard to shoot?
drptop70ss Dec 10th, 03, 3:23 PM Bottom line is I have too many cars and gotta move some out. Ugly cars dont sell well no matter how well they run so I have to put on some color before I sell anything. I have one I want to do dark metallic blue and am considering SS urethane. What is the price difference between getting a gallon of SS vs getting a gallon of base and a gallon of clear? I am trying to keep my investment low so I can just sell cheap and quickly. I will be doing a color change and will painting the jams, etc. I normally have used the PPG line, maybe I should try to get this in the Nason line? I am not a pro but have painted a few cars with SS solid colors and they came out very well.
69ssmike Dec 10th, 03, 3:58 PM Would not use the single stage metallic!!,very hard to shoot and cannot be buffed unless you put clear over it.If it's metallic ya want, stick with bc/cc.Shot some single stage nason and it wasn't bad. My .02 Mike
1966_L78 Dec 10th, 03, 4:05 PM I am not an expert, but have painted my own car with a SS metallic...
It is definitely less forgiving. Air pressure and material delivery are pretty critical, because the metallic has to go on evenly... Gun handling technique also plays into this more than a non-metallic color. I have seen many metallics where the metal flakes make "tiger stripes".
With a metallic, you will have to clear-coat if you want to wetsand (to eliminate orange peel, runs, etc).
Also very hard to duplicate (for an amatuer) if you need to respray just one panel later, plus you would have to repaint a whole panel at a time for spot repairs, no blending.
I had one run in the hood and a bug in the 1/4 panel... Had to let them sit for a day, sand out the run, etc. Then reshoot those panels. I notice the difference in the panels everytime I look at the car...
I will probably paint more cars, but likely to keep mostly to non-metallics...
Mine was painted in a carport with about 6-8 partial days of prep (car was already disassembled and rust repaired prior), priming/blocking, sealing and paint application... Another day on the touch up and one more applying 3 coats of clear so I could remove minor orange peel...
Lasted for 8+ years so far, and still looks great. Never win a trophy, but I can hang at the local shows (Although I am sure bodymen laugh at it). Back then, good product, about $750 for all materials (primer, tape,paint/activator/fisheye reducer/etc, thinners for cleaning, etc)...
more ambition than brains Dec 10th, 03, 8:32 PM Haven't used single stage metallics for years. We used to apply a LOT of ss acrylic and straight enamels.
PPG's name for product was Delstar. Don't use their Product anymore, so can be of little help. It was a catalyzed product.
SS metallics are at times, more difficult to apply, however, in a dark blue it shouldn't be too tough.
For something that is going down the road, acrylic enamel is cheaper and more than adequate.
Treat ALL refinish products like POISON!!!
Good ventilation (BOOTH) and all personal safety equipment is a MUST!!!

turbo Dec 11th, 03, 5:26 PM I agree ss metallics can be done but it is a bit of a challenge! I have done only about 10 paintjobs over the years and the last one was a ss metallic and it is the worst looking one! I'm pretty sure my problem was that my compressor did not supply enough cfm for what I was spraying though.
drptop70ss Dec 11th, 03, 6:25 PM Thanks for the info guys..I understand the SS will be harder to shoot, if I use it I will use a junk panel to set the gun up and go from there. I am going to compare the price, if its not a great difference in price I will go with the BC/CC, but I will try the SS if its a big spread. I agree that the catalized enamel is plenty durable and I have gotten enough practice to keep the orange peel down when spraying it. Now if I could just get the temps here to jump about 30 degrees I would be set, but I dont think I will painting till april. Gotta get some heat in the garage!
70isfine Dec 12th, 03, 8:55 AM Dave if your looking for cheap that looks great see if you can find a place that sells Akzo Nobel. If they do you should be able to get U-Tech basecoat and clear. Up to a 1/3 of the price of others and it looks and sprays great. You could get a base/clear setup for around the price of SS.
