: Laquer Gloss Clear (Rattle Can) question

I did a search and I think I know how the answer will apply to my question, but I just want to double check.

I'm working on a airbrush project that I have been clearing with lacquer. Normally I would use acyrlic enamel, but I didn't want to wait the 5 days between coats. I used an old can I had from a few years ago and it was great. But I ran out and so I bought some Dutch Boy gloss clear. I'm not happy with the results though. I'd say it is more like a semi gloss than a pure gloss. So this can is headed for the garbage and I need to get another brand.

A. Can anyone reccommend a high gloss rattle can clear?

B. (the real question) Will I be ok if I go back to my acrylic enamel for my final top coat? (enamel over lacquer) I have alot of time in this project and I'd sure hate to screw it up this close to completion.

I've tried several brands of rattle can clear and none of them give a nice clear gloss. All of them give a kind of cloudy semi-gloss like you describe.

I'm puzzled about the "five days between coats" statement. Catylized acrylic enamel can be sprayed over fresh lacquer within 4-6 hours. Catylized acrylic enamel can be re-coated within 24 hours in most cases. There are some variations on recoat times by brand but most are about 24 hours.

On the acylic cans it says to wait 5 days or wrinkling will occur. I've screwed up more than one project getting impatient.

You can put enamel over lacquer but not the other way around. Lacquer is to hot for enamel and will wrinkle it. If your enamel is aged (6 month)you may get away with it.

vettefella, I used Ace brand gloss lacquer last night and it worked great. VERY shiny and clear. When I get my art up on the wall, I'll shoot a pic and post it. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

With rattle can jobs I put crystal clear Polyuethane spray on last. Works great.
