: Deck stripe painting question
phishfud Nov 16th, 01, 2:59 PM Ok, i finally found a shop to paint my 72. When do the deck striped get applied? Is it before the base, or after the car is done? Do i have to wait a while for the paint to cure before getting them put on? any help would be great. thanks all.
chev64 Nov 16th, 01, 3:02 PM I think that the paint shop ought to know that kind of stuff.

RC 70 Nov 16th, 01, 4:29 PM The paint shop better know, or you picked the wrong place. To answer your question though the stripes are painted on after the car is painted. If your price doesn't include the stripe stencil make sure you buy one in advance, No make that 2 sets. They are still kinda tricky to get lined up, and if you don't use the second set it's returnable or sell it here on TC. It's a real bummer to be all set to stripe your car, screw up part of the stencil and then have to wait for a new one to be shipped. I had clear sprayed over my stripes but you don't have too. It's a matter of choice.
How long did they say it would be at the paint shop? Keep us posted. BTW what part of Vegas are you in? Chances are real good I'll be moving out there the first of the year.
And just a reminder...Super Chevy Show is at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway this weekend.
phishfud Nov 16th, 01, 8:39 PM Thanks for the advice. I'll make sure to get two sets. Dont know how long it will be in the shop yet. I am doing all the prep work to save cash, so the guy is just going to spray it. Shouldnt be too long i hope. Is there a waiting period before they can go on? Didnt know if the paint had to cure or not. Actually, i dont live in vegas anymore, i just never changed my info. I lived there for 3 years, and then moved back to pittsburgh. Its a nice place to visit, but living there aint so hot. At least not for me. Thanks again for the info.

Noneck Nov 16th, 01, 10:45 PM We shot my car in the evening. Then the next morning striped it. Then an hour or so later the clear was poured on top. The it was wetsanded twice and buffed. I like the fact that you can't feel the stripes whenyou run your hand over them.

Busted Nov 21st, 01, 9:29 AM Funny, I thought the stencils were to cover the stripes before you painted the base color. Am I reading this all wrong? I thought you painted the stripe color first. Let cure...then applied the stencil. Shot the base color, then clear.
If I am wrong please let me know.....as I am planing to do the very same.
Jeffry72 Nov 21st, 01, 11:00 AM The stencil helps you line up the stripes and covers the part you don't want painted. Paint the color on the car, stencil off the stripes and paint them, and then cover it all in clear.
Jimmy P Nov 21st, 01, 12:24 PM Now, let's get this straight. What kind of stripes are you planning to put on? There's 3 correct ways of doing stripes.
(1) Base coat/clear coat paint.
Base color is first, stripes second, then clear coat over top of everything. If you want the stripes 'buried' in the clear, you may want to spray two coats of clear, sand with 1000 grit and apply two more coats to the striped areas.
(2) Single stage paint with stripes.
Spray the main color with single stage paint.
Let dry for 24 hours. Wet sand areas to be striped with 1,000 grit to remove orange peel. Then spray the stripe color with single stage urethane. wet sand and buff.
(3) Any type paint with decal stripes.
Hopefully your using a quality urethane paint with a hardener. Let paint dry for 3 months (you are in Pittsburgh and it's winter) before applying decals. The paint and reducers continue to dry for a long period of time and the decal will lift and bubble with the underlying 'fumes' escaping the surface.
How 'bout them Steelers!!!
phishfud Nov 21st, 01, 1:55 PM I had planned on using stencils, and after all i have read, a bc/cc seems the best ticket. So now i shall go ahead and get it done. I cannot wait! Been a year so far on this resto, and the light at the end is finally in sight. As far as the Steelers go, rock on!!! I knew they had it in them. Thanks again to everyone.
