: Are all repro wheel opening moldings the same?

I would like to put wheel opening moldings on my ’70. I’m wondering if there is any one Chevelle parts supplier that sells a better quality repro wheel opening molding than the others. Or, do all of the suppliers sell basically the same foreign made product?

I understand that with all repro moldings I will have to do a little engineering to get them to fit correctly. I am hoping to find a supplier whose moldings require the least amount of engineering and provide a decent finish.

I was at a swap meet a few weeks back and took a look at one supplier’s moldings. I was surprised and disappointed to see how dull the anodized aluminum finish was and that the ends appeared as if there were cut by hand with tin snips. I guess I expected to see a ‘brighter’ finish and more of a machined look to the ends. Did the original GM moldings have cut-off ends?

Thanks.

Dave, I had a conversation with a sales rep from OPG. He said virtually ALL aftmkt mouldings are made from the same stamping machine, then packaged and sold as competitive products. They are also ALL quite dull when compared to an OEM part. They can be polished to a higher sheen, but he said when you're buying aftmkt trim pieces, just go for the best price first!

Thanks tloleson. Yeah, I suspected I would get an answer along those lines based on some of the older posts I found. I was hoping things might have changed for the better recently. I guess I’ll go with what’s available locally and just make sure the moldings are dent and scratch free. Maybe, someday, after new paint, I’ll go the extra step of removing the anodizing to get the best shine possible.

heatsealers- Thanks for the reference. Are the ends of the repro moldings you purchased ‘snipped’ or are they machine finished in some other way? I have never thought to take notice of how the ends of original GM moldings are finished, so I don’t really know what’s correct.
