OK guys, the "Teal" stripes are OUT !! redface.gif
I was afraid it was a bad idea graemlins/sad.gif and that is why I'm asking. Thank you for your honesty
The bumpers will still be white.....or match the stripe color, or should I leave them chrome ?
The body will be Cortez Silver....definitely.
Again, it is a '70 Chevelle with a 4" Harwood Outlaw scoop that will be mainly used for bracket racing on weekends. This is not a "correct" restoration, obviously.
I want your opinions for color of the stripes...
What color should I paint the stripes on this Cortez Silver car ? (any color or no stripes)
a few ideas :
Hugger Orange
Cobalt Blue
Tuxedo Black
Maybe no stripes at all ?
What color idea do you have ?????
Give me your color idea and the most popular (posted)will win and thanks again graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I could always go get a gallon of RED paint, leave the bumpers chrome and be done with it. That is precisely why I am posting this. I am looking for something different without it looking "stupid". ;)

Of the colors you have there I think either the colbolt blue, or black... I think a metallic charcoal type color would look good also...

Believe it or not, white actually goes with silver very good, looks clean and somewhat refined. Gold would be different also and wouldn't look too Godddy. And there's always black :(

House of Kolor has a Kameleon color that switches from gold to silver without all the reds and purples these colors almost always show. It shows gold on the face but silver on the side angle so if it were used for your stripe color you would mostly see the stripes looking straight down at the face but they would somewhat hide on the side view being your car is silver. You could also shoot a test panel in the gold to silver and tailor the main silver color of the car to better match the silver displayed by the Kameleon color. Anybody else? more ideas.

Cortez silver is a great color. Let's just say that's the base color.
Stripe color:
Black Variations would include metallic, and/or pearls for a charcoal black.
Ghost SS Stripes A single shade darker silver for the stripes so they only appear close up. Buried under the clear, this looks great. I've done this combo before on a Cobra kit car.
Pearl white stripes This combo is definately 3rd on my list, but I've seen a 70 SS Chevelle and a 69 Camaro done this way. It looks surprisingly good. Both cars had a pearl interior though.

For the life of me, I can't 'see' white bumpers on anything other than a white car. And even then, body colored bumpers were a FAD from about 15 years ago. Passe. Most definately in the OUT: column of Popular Hot Rodding. To me, it would look like a half done job.
Some fiberglass bumpers come in a white gel coat. It would look like they didn't get painted. Like someone just bolted them on to go racing. Not a finished car look. If you insist on painting them, body color for Cortez silver would be, uh, OK, I guess.
If the car was black, I might paint them a muted silver.

I know it's fun to pick out different colors for your car. But please realize this when you're asking our opinions. We have loved these cars since thier inception. They all came from the factory with certain colors and chrome bumpers. Our mind's eye is trained for a 70 Chevelle to look a certain way. The factory colors will appeal to 95% of us. Anything outside of that is a gamble for you. Yes, there are cars out there painted in a different way, color scheme or even with flames and they look awesome. But that's why we see them. Because the work was excellent and they pulled it off. Some even made magazine articles.

But, there's plenty of just awefull, hideous looking cars out there that are going to be as popular as Michael Jackson at Southern Baptist Church conference. Cars that just don't look right and nobody would want to be be seen standing next to.

Look at this truck: Painter had a respirator without filters (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2454462754&category=5348)

It just dosen't look right. How many people are going to want to be seen driving this? Nothing wrong with the truck, just the paint scheme. Looks like Hildie from Trading Spaces designed this paint job. Are those rounded off flames or a green truck driving through a bucket of yellow paint? Or maybe a farmer with a John Deere fetish. I don't get it.

Jimmy, your points are well taken and of course, I would not paint my car "Lime Green" and "Canary Yellow". You have some good suggestions and I am looking for plenty more.... graemlins/thumbsup.gif
BTW, I have modified my post at the top to ask about leaving the bumpers alone (chrome) ....or matching stripes

I would just like to establish the stripe "color" first, then debate the bumper scenerio.. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Keep the bumpers chrome in my opinion. I think I seen the car you got the white bumper idea from, it is a deep cobalt blue chevelle? If so the bumpers are actually a shade of silver with pearl in the mix--look close.

I like the stance, I like the cobalt color. But in my opinion it would look better it the bumpers were painted blue also. I see nothing to warrant all the attention the bumpers are getting being a whitish/silver. Picture the bumpers blue like the rest of the trim and I think you'll get the picture. JMHO

JMHO  My original plan was to match the bumpers to whatever color the stripes ended up being. Would this "work" ? Or, are you suggesting I paint the bumpers Cortez Silver or leave chrome only ?

If you want a good idea of how your car would look with white bumpers, find a pic off the net that matches your year with the cortez silver, and use Photoshop or similar type photo-editing program and color in the bumpers a white color.

Yes, I did exactly that yesterday and here is the result with the teal stripes also:

Dont get me wrong the cobalt blue car is nice, but the painted bumpers to me DONT look good on that car.
The painted bumpers and tires are kinda like saying "Hey look at me look at me" then you turn around to get a look and its some snarly looking broad instead of that hot blonde you had in mind.

Sorry but I still think that WHITE bumpers SUCK. Its nothing but a total distraction from the rest of car. graemlins/sad.gif

Am all for something totally different, but you gotta see when a idea is NOT for a certain style of car.

Id go with the ghost SS stripes, am planning on doing this to mine but in pearl yellow

Have you read baddbob's post about candy colors ?
This also might be a nice option....a candy cobalt blue or candy apple red set of stripes over the Cortez Silver...

What do you think about something in a candy ??
BTW, I got my 3M mask yesterday and used it for shooting some misc parts yesterday. Works great :D

I always thought this car looked unfinished, or like the many construction trucks I drove over the years. The companies didn't want to pay the extra 50 bucks for chrome bumpers so they ordered them white. Several times they looked so bad that I painted them body color on my own.

There was a big discussion about this car and its white bumpers a couple of years back. I didn't like the looks of it then, don't now. The white looks like a cheap after thought IMHO.

I agree, the white bumpers do not look good on that Blue Chevelle... But thats my opinion, as I am sure there are many people that do think it looks fine...

I'd leave the bumpers chrome...

As for the stripes, I suggest a deep red or maroon. I think that would look good against the silver...

Or "ghost" stripe, but using only some pearl in the clear, with only one color of silver on the car... Of course, with the metallic of the silver, they might not "pop" out as much...

My car is frost green, going back with a similiar color, light green with metallic and a darker shade of green stripes with metallic. I've had a couple people tell me to go back with the standard white or black SS stripes, but I like to personalize my cars graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Paint the bumpers the same color as the car and paint the stripes black.
