: Drivers side alternator wiring for a 67

I have a 70 396 in a 67. The previous owner has the alternator on the passenger side. I just bought the short PS pump and reservoir, etc and the brackets for the drivers side install. I plan to move it all over correctly.

Where are the 2 wires for the alternator supposed to route from on that side (drivers)? I want to make it look right and I have plenty of wire since they extended the wires to go to the passenger side.

From the fenderwell straight across to the alternator?
Follow the PS hoses and come up within the brackets? (they would be hidden)

Any pictures of this would be great. I searched around the site and saw how some did it, but thought I would ask....

Thanks

Mike

I found this pic on another thread. I think it answered my question?

I think your answer depends on what you want...

The factory did not do anything fancy, they just ran the wires across the inner fender to the alternator.

When I went through this same exercise with the 402 in my '68 I ran the wires across the front of the valve cover, down the inside edge of the valve cover, and tied into the harness at the back of the motor. This makes for a much longer wire run than the factory but looks better IMHO. I also fabricated up some wire retainers under the valve cover bolts as well.

Part of my motivation was there were other wires for temperature sensor and fan switch that needed to run along there as well. And once you have one wire... a few more make no difference.

I also cannabilized a high power stereo install kit for the alternator power wire to handle the higher output of the CS140 I put in.

Yeah Mike...that's how they run.

Steve,

Makes sense and I have a very long wire run already completed since they ran it all the way across the radiator core to the other side.

Thanks,

Mike

Oh one last comment... that main power feed from the alternator is, or should be, a fairly large wire/cable. These can be difficult to splice well as I noted in the hack job some PO did on my harness when they put in the late BB with alternator on the wrong side. Both wires coming into the splice were fanned out and about half soldered :-p I recommend running a new wire/cable all the way from the alternator to the horn bus bar.

I have always wondered what GM was thinking when they moved the alternator over to the PS with the LWP setups. Not only did it put it further away from the main system feed point but it forced the A/C compressor to the DS. And that meant longer hoses running over the top of the engine. Really seemed like they messed that up.

Steve,

I checked where they spliced it and it looked pretty good. I might just run a new wire though.

Thanks for the 'heads up'

FYI...you can buy the correct engine harness make specifically for your application brand new for less than $100 and the front light harness is around $150. Those two items basically replace everything forward of the firewall.
I personally always prefer to replace 40 yr old wiring...
