Hey guys, I have some rust issues in a hard place to fix... its the cowl area that houses the wipers and where the windshield seals. Its not that theres rust there, its thats there are holes there where some knuckle head patched with putty and it cracked. I ground it all out and am now comptemplating how to fix it. I have thought about cutting sheet metal to piece in the areas, that way it would keep everything flat enough for the windshield to seal, but thats pretty tedious... any help?

Clark,

Depending on how bad it is, metal sounds like the way to go.

However, on my '68, I only had about a dime sized hole and a few pinholes where the windshield sat. I used POR15 putty, sanded and POR'd the whole thing. It worked very well.

Good luck!

I just completed the EXACT same thing as dreinecke this past weekend. The POR-Putty worked well...solid as a rock, but you may not want to go that way.

Here's a few pics and you can see how bad mine was for comparison...

I've seen that POR15 Putty on ebay, how hard does it setup? I don't want to use anything there that will just crack out again like the putty did. I am going to need to weld in some metal but the putty might save me some work if it is as good as it sounds.

The POR15 site says it can be drilled, tapped, painted, etc...I just used it in a few places as "filler"...not too thick, just to make it smooth. I did fill in a few holes, some about 1/4 the size of a dime, nothing too big.

There was an article in Car Craft, I believe that used the putty to fill in small holes in their Camaro trunk project. That article was in the pamphlet that POR sent when I orederd the putty.
