Do I need a special kit?

Oh yeah, my wife is expecting our first, due in July! :hurray: We are very excited.

Here is a pic and video from the ultrasound. IF you turn on your speakers for the video, I think you will note that the baby takes after me!!

I used the lap belt in the middle of the back seat. The key is to put your weight onto the baby seat and pull the lap belt tight through the back retainer of the car seat. You may want to place a bath towel under the car seat to keep it from digging into your vinyl, and to catch crumbs from snacks.

Both of my younger kids have ridden in the chevelle in car seats without any issues. Personally I think the lap belt is safer with the car seat than the new combo lap/shoulder belt assembly with the cinching clip. It is a much tighter fit and the car seat has no movement when installed properly.
Congratulations on the expected little one.

Exactly what I did, Don't forget the towel. And I always un-hook mine when done as to not dent the seat.

Congratulations Ron, here comes the most exciting, challenging, and rewarding times of your marriage and life. Enjoy. My daughter still thinks its cool to go for a ride in the Chevelle. I wonder how much longer this will last. :hurray: Oh yeah, if you don't want to know what the sex of the baby is, make it clear to the tech not to say anything before you go for the next scan. They are usually pretty good about this. Andy, that's a real cutie pie ya got there. Daren

Good info as we are expecting in July as well! Going in for the sonogram next week. I think I have a dealer option sheet from '71 with a baby seat in it, I am going to look when I get home.Would'nt that be cool , having a baby seat made by Chevy w/ a Bowtie emblem on it? Doubt if it would meet todays safety standards, but ...I will scan it when I find it.

How about for older kids. Mine are 4 and 6, so they don't have seats with shoulder straps. I heard Simpson has seats, buy I already have enough invested in car seats, don't need to buy another one for probably Hundred plus more bucks.

congrats Ron!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I may know a thing or two about the seats.;) Lap belt will be fine until they reach the weight limit of the seat. You'll run into a problem at about 3-4 years. They will become to heavy for the belts that come with the seat. The seat manufacturer then suggests to use the seat as a positioning device and use the shoulder/lap harness in the car.

This is the Chevelle (or any older car) problem. We searched for a seat with self containd straps that would hold up to 60 lbs. Wound up with only one. It was a Fisher Price seat Rated at 60 lbs with the included harness and the seat could be restrained with just a lap belt. We used them from about age 3-5 years.

We found the seat by contacting the US HWY Transportation board. The seats were not available in stores and were purchased direct from Fisher Price.

You have plenty of time for that. We'll talk about what you can do in July.:beers:

In the meantime congrats and enjoy:thumbsup: . Everything will change in a few months:D

Hey Bryan,
I had the same issue with my two kids, ages 5 and 8. During my resto I drilled two holes in the corners of the package tray on top. I welded threaded nuts to a small 4X4 steel plate and welded it to the under side of the package tray. I made my own shoulder system using extra seat belt bolts, lap belts and buckles. I works great and you can take out the shoulder harness belts for shows if you like. Most people at the shows never even notice them.

Cool news, Ron.
I'm sure you will get lots of info from the guys here. Sorry our daughter was in a baby seat too many years ago for me to be current with the newer seats and setups.
All the best.

The retro seats are cool, but I'd never but our 11 month old in one, the technology of safety has evovled a lot in the last 25 years. Heck, seats for 3-4 years ago are not longer current.

Andy, how old was you babygirl when you went for a top-down ride? We are dying to take our girl in the Mustang.

I will echo the comments about "get it tight". We just had an inspection at the local hospital and wow! did they ever get that seat tight -- it literally took three people amount 10 minute. The recommended against the LATCH system and used the lap/shoulder belt in the center. You can buy a seat protector, they are sold as "leather seat" protectors. The have slots for the belt buckles and the come up the seat back a bit so nothing can get into the seam.

THanks everyone for the wishes. And thanks for posting the '71 accessories pics, neat!

Rob: It looks like we will miss the CanAm show :( :( Our due date is July 9th. Even if the baby was home early, getting a passport in time would be next to impossible. I have been with the club since the beginning, I hope I have a good enough excuse to miss a show. I am gonna miss hanging with you guys, please do a burn-out for me! I intend to go to the Club's Canadian show in Stratford in September though...

We are very excited and have a lot of work ahead of me in home renovations... almost finished the major bathroom overhaul, and now onto a nursery!

Here is a pic of the seats. I've heard they are discontinued. They are about double the weight of regular seats. This pic is from Chevell~abration 2002. The seats have since been handed down to my twins.
