: House of Kolor or Xotic paints?
zachscc Feb 25th, 04, 2:49 AM I just got off the phone today with John the guy at flexsanders.com and he says that HOK is way better than PPG and he has used them all. What do you guys think? I also checked out Xotic paints on Nates inate.com site
All I want is a bright solid blood red like the HOK Cosmos Red or PPG#4679 and a killer clear that I can shoot at home in my make shift booth. That will last and resist rock chips. John at flexsand says that UC35 is the clear of all clears. Anybody have any experience with these companies/products?

70_chevelle Feb 25th, 04, 10:22 AM I've shot 3 cars with HOK paints, used UFC35 on one and UC35 on the others. I absolutley love their paints, but then a gain I've never used any other paints and I'm no expert...

zachscc Feb 25th, 04, 3:43 PM Thanks Lee, I assume you shot these in your garage with only a few fans for slight airflow and not a high flow booth, and the clears laid down well?
Open any car mag and I garantee you at least half of the $30K feature cars in there are shot with HOK, all the cars at shows I have seen with HOK are awsome for gloss holdout, coverage etc..(must be something to it all) and the stuff is the same $ for clear and about half price for their high end base color. I have seen some bad posts about their primers and John at flexsand recomends Valspar for primers and HOK for base and clear. ;)
DaDon Feb 25th, 04, 4:52 PM I shot a coat of the Valspar primer on my car, in my garage, just before the weather got too cold to spray any more. It built easily and sanded well, in my inexperienced opinion. Once it warms up a bit, I'll shoot another coat and block one last time. The guy shooting my car has been in the business for a lot of years, and he insists on HOK paints. I was all fired up on PPG from all the great stuff I read here but, ya gotta go with what you can.
ccarney69 Feb 25th, 04, 5:12 PM I read the HOK book on custom painting. Read a couple of others too. Getting ready to paint my first car (65 impala), built me a make shift paint booth and intend to use HOK paint system. His product sounds top of the line. Alot of good info too. I'm out.
70_chevelle Feb 25th, 04, 6:36 PM zachscc - I did the entire process for two of them in my garage and 1 I did all the prep work and primer but barrowed a booth for the final paint. The clear goes on incredably easy. I've never painted or did body work until the chevelle. The ease of use with the HOK paints made me look like a pro. I've placed first in a couple of shows and 2nd in a couple of shows. Both the camaro and the chevelle was awarded best street awards and the chevelle took super chevy's award. I'm not bragging I'm just letting you know that if the prep work is 100% then the HOK will lay down real nice even with a novice. The new kandy yellow camaro will be going to the autorama in a few weeks... we'll se if I do any good there!
You can see the details from the links below.
Good luck,
Lee
zachscc Feb 25th, 04, 7:52 PM Lee, that Camero is beautiful. How long do you wait between those 5 coats of clear, just flash time? Do you buff everywhere or just where it needs it? ie.. wool pad etc.. finally what is Candy and what does it do? Do you mix it with the base yellow or what? What did you use as a sealer?
Seems like you may have found a hobby that will pay for itself if you can part with any of these! smile.gif
70_chevelle Feb 25th, 04, 8:58 PM zackscc - The wait time is dependent on what reducer you use and the temperature. For me it's about 15 to 20 minutes.
I buff everywhere I can reach, where I cant reach with the buffer I do it by hand. Each buffing takes about a day for me, that's not working on it 100% of the time though. I wet sand every inch of it. I first wet sand, then wool with diamond cut, then foam with diamond cut and finally a soft foam with Farecla G10. Then in about a month I polish it with Zaino, Zaino absolutely makes it incredible!
Kandy is a translucent paint that you paint over a base color, all the cars I have are kandy. If you spray your hand you will still see every detail but it will have a tint of the color.
I use all HOK products. I first use their epoxy primer, sealer, base coat, kandy coat and then clear. They have black, white or silver sealer, match what works best for your color.
I really love the new yellow 67, I'm having a hard time parting with it.. I asked my wife last night if we could sell the motor home and keep the camaro! (she said no)

sevt_chevelle Feb 25th, 04, 9:12 PM Zach, when we were having some problems with S-W a few years back a local supplier heard of this and brought over some Valspar for use to try out.
Their epoxy primer VP50 is TOP notch, great product. The primer surfacer we used was suprafill 92N, very close to PPG's K38. Sanded nice, sprayed nice.
The bad thing about Valspar was their basecoats and clears. Wasnt to impressed. We tried them out for about 3-4 months and decided to go with PPG.
From my limited experience with Valspar Id say they have a good undercoat system, their topcoats leave much to be desired, pretty much a (small)step above OMNI IMO
zachscc Feb 26th, 04, 12:02 AM Eric that supra fill92N can be used as a sealer like the K-36 and is about a $100 retail for a gallon with the cat! Sounds like I may switch to Valspar primers and HOK topcoats, like John does all his cars with smile.gif
