I called Pilkington Glass, there Classic Glass Dept. this morning to check on a back glass for my car, to replace the brand new flawed one I have installed right now, which is from Auto City Classics. Has a bad tempering problem, shows up BAD in shade or cloudy days.
Any way, I'm talking to a friendly sales person over the phone at pilkington and I explain my situation, which he says is a common problem. I ask if he has glass availbale for my Chevelle, he says he has 2 ready to go. $175 plus tax and $100 shipping to the Left coast. Than he says they get there glass from a few different places (I thought they had there own made). The 2 he has in stock are from AUTO CITY CLASSICS, the same place my badly flawed one is from. WTF.
I thought Pilkington was suppose to have the best glass around??????????? There own glass....
He said after we hang up he is going to check the glass they have in different angles in shade to be sure there is NO BAD flaws
Any thoughts or comments....My present glass can be exchanged with no problem, just afraid of having the same problem so I wanted to go with the best glass co. My complaint here is with pilkington glass, they don't seem to have there own brand..

I got all my glass from ACC and it was fine. I was told they make it, but also sell to other wholesalers. Most glass will show those flaws in the glass only when you look at it with sun glasses on. If you walk around Chevellabration, on a bright sunny day with sun glasses on, most of the glass looks like that. If it's real bad, I'd send it back and get another piece. As I said, mine was good. The rear glass is the most expensive piece on the car. It's large and it's tempered.

If/when you do need to swap it with AutoCity, talk to Mike in the front office. I forget in this saga if you've sent him pics already, but make sure he's aware of the issue. I spoke with my glass guy who's company is a "sister" to ACC's glass department (I think same guy owns both companies, but they aren't telling me in so many words, and I didn't ask). He said there's not really anyone who makes the stuff that also has real strict quality control since there's just so few made. He agreed that you've probably got the best out there, and maybe just a bad piece. Not sure who the actual manufacturer is, if it's not Pilkington.

That's all I knows,
Bryan

Actually the glass was bought from True Connections in Riverside which sells Auto city classic glass. They have OK'd a replacement. But to have to remove this glass which was a little chore to put in because of some issues, is a real bummer, as the installation turned out real good. Second time around, I can only hope for the best.. BUT, its going to have to happen, because I thought I could live with it for a while, but aint going to work. Thanks for the info Guys.

Good luck with that Rich, hate to see you tear up something freshly installed. Let us know how the new one looks.

Latest on Back Glass headaches.
Have an ACC glass installed now with the worst tempering flaws I've seen. I went back for a replacement glass and they brought out another ACC (auto city classics) and it was the same after inspecting in the shade. Than they brought out a PPG back glass which has the wrong curves. I figured I'm stuck with it because there doesn't seem to be any good glass available right now, and my PPG windshield is perfect. Bought the PPG back glass and last night I checked it just to see if any tempering flaws where there, and could not believe what I saw. There were 4 verticle lines from top bottom and the rest were all circular markings thru out the glass. Mine looks like Tiger stripes thru out and the PPG looks like Cheetah spots thru out. Not quite as bad as the one on my car now, but almost. I know all back glass has these tempering marks but this is ridiculous. I'm now looking for Original used glass in my local area.
With Poloroid glasses, you probably can't see thru this glass.
Are some of you Guys living with this junk? In the SUN there is NO problem, they look Good..I'm finished looking for new replacement glass.

WOW, that's too bad. I'll make sure I get a PPG windshield when mine goes back in too. Did you get that from ACC?

I have an ancient PPG rear glass, that is flawless, wonder why the quality dropped?

From a local PPG dealer on west coast. also noticed the PPG back glass is thinner than the ACC glass. Front PPG is same thickness as stock.
To my surprise Pilkington Classics supplies PPG glass also. Thats a shocker.

Maybe yours was U.S made. These other junks are made in China.

Windshields don't seem to have this problem. But if your worried, you have to check in the shade. cloudy day the best.

The "DOT" number on the glass tells what factory it was made in.
Your local glass co. can tell you where it was made just by the DOT number.
I bought a kit from ACC and sent the door glass back because it didnt have the correct compound curve .
In looking for other door glass I found it was all made by the same factory and its all junk.
They roll it in one direction then lazer cut it, look at a new quarter glass sometime and compaire it to OE, what a joke.
I eventually found good OE glass .

Glad I kept my rear glass, got a few imperfections to it, but not that bad.

Has anyone ever dealt with OEM Glass from Chenoa, IL?? It looks like none of these glass folks have anything of quality.
