: Looking for a good crate motor recomendation
Burnsamatic Feb 19th, 07, 9:42 PM I'm looking for a big block street/strip pump gas crate motor that won't break the budget. I'm considering the Bill Mitchell 509/540 horse iron head engine for $8K.
Shafiroff engines offers a 540/695 horse aluminum head engine less carb and distributor for $9K. That's alot more motor for only a grand more.
Any other suggestions? Has anyone had any experience with the above engines? Thanks in advance for your help.
Burnsamatic Feb 20th, 07, 1:47 PM Anybody use T and L engines? Good, bad?
mr 4 speed Feb 20th, 07, 2:11 PM I think Shafiroff would be your best bet
69velle Feb 20th, 07, 2:23 PM I think if you did a search on Bill Mitchell, you would find many dissatified customers here. I have never dealt with them or anything, but I just remember reading over the posts.
fowl69 Feb 20th, 07, 3:44 PM here are a some more to look at . steveschmidtracing.com and rehermorrison.com

Burnsamatic Feb 21st, 07, 11:48 AM I checked those websites that you mentioned and they have mainly race engines.Steve Schmidt's engines are 15K. Too much money.
I'm looking for a pump gas 650-700 horse engine.
driver Feb 21st, 07, 12:18 PM Gm Or The Boy's From New York.
70 SS LS-5 Feb 21st, 07, 1:42 PM I'd go with a GM.
Whatever you do, don't go with a Bill Mitchell. I know they're cheap but no amount of money is worth the bad experiences that myself and others here have had with them.
CHEVELLE572 Feb 21st, 07, 1:47 PM I second what Driver said. When I went looking for a motor I was going to go with Shafiroff pretty much had it all orderd. And the main reason I didn't go with them If somthing were to go wrong It would have to be created back up and sent back to them in NY.Now with GM you can go to any dealership. And GM has been making motors a lone time. But Shafiroff seemed top notch very nice I was going to even send a friend that lives on long island to go watch it get dynoed when they got done building it.
fowl69 Feb 21st, 07, 3:08 PM something to look at went to the tandlengines.com and the 540 they show is with a mk 6 gm block Im pretty sure that is as big as you can go with that block and no rebuild room.
Burnsamatic Feb 21st, 07, 3:22 PM So the Shafiroff engines are good and reputable?
ss396boy Feb 21st, 07, 3:32 PM Why not look for a Merlin shortblock and thow a set of AFR's on it. I think that's the route I'm gonna go. Then pick a roller cam to go with it and you are set.

look at this thread and there are a few more .
Burnsamatic Feb 21st, 07, 4:05 PM I did that already. Bought a 468 short block, a set of Merlin heads, the rest of the parts from Summit, and the engine grenaded the first pass at the track. Gotta big hole in the oil pan. Besides, I feel piecing something together is just as much, if not more, than buying an assembled crate motor with a dyno sheet and a 2 year warranty.
69ttop502 Feb 21st, 07, 6:34 PM Here is my opinion on this matter. I would get a local builder to build you one. When I had my motor built, and believe me I was very uninformed at the time, he showed me a brand new Bill Mitchell 632 that had serious problems right out tof the box. Not to mention, the reason I was there was because my 7500 mile GM 502 crate motor used a quart of oil every 250-300 miles. Be careful with these warranties because they mostly don't cover labor. Go with someone local who builds motors as he will do you right most of the time if for no other reason, he doesn't want to see you come back in the door unsatisfied. Even if I went with a crate motor, I would probably have someone go through it anyway. I have heard too many stories of bad engines right out of the box.

driver Feb 21st, 07, 7:03 PM I have had three GM crate big block's..Two 502's and one 454 and ran them pretty hard and never had any problems what so ever. I think price wise the 502 is the best bang for the buck.If it was me I would buy the zz502 short block and add my own cam and heads and so on.That's pretty much what I did and the motor ran 10.99.Just did a cam change and head work which I hope for a 10.50-10-60 car on pump gas.I think the 572 is over priced but that's just my thoughts.
69-CHVL Feb 21st, 07, 7:56 PM I like the ZZ502 shortblock and your own heads, but that gets $$$ real quick. The ZZ502 shortblk is like 4000.00 + shipping. By the time you get heads, cam/lifters, rockers, intake, waterpump, covers, bolts, etc, you might as well go Shaffiroff.
And the thing is, your paying 4000.00 for a ZZ502 shortblock that isn't even percision balanced, plate honed, piston is down in the hole (not zero decked).
Now I think the complete ZZ502 is a better deal.
70 SS LS-5 Feb 21st, 07, 10:25 PM Why not look for a Merlin shortblock and thow a set of AFR's on it. I think that's the route I'm gonna go. Then pick a roller cam to go with it and you are set.
Before you do, please search for and read the threads regarding Bill Mitchell (Merlin) products.
JWA Feb 21st, 07, 11:17 PM I gotta ask so why did the first motor grenade?
Burnsamatic Feb 21st, 07, 11:23 PM Not sure yet. I haven't pulled it out and stripped it down yet. I'm sure there are salvagable parts but I want to go crate motor this time and I'll salvage all parts off the 468 and build it back up someday and put it in another rolling chassis.
Burnsamatic Feb 22nd, 07, 10:02 AM T and L engines has 100 percent feedback on e bay if that means anything.
Burnsamatic Feb 22nd, 07, 10:04 AM theirs a few good builders in the Bucks Co area.........
