Typically the underside was somewhere around satin black to semi-flat black. Some plants at some times (such as the Fremont, CA plant) left the underside of the floor pans n just primer. It didn't seem to be very consistant even at that plant since some got black and some did not. How well covered the whole underside was is up for debate at all. It's not like that portion of the car was typically up for review by a buyer so they really didn't put a lot of thought or effort into painting this area well or completely.
Since the bodies received their final color coat with the body shell on the frame, some (most?) had some amount of body color overspray on the sides of the frame rails.

Rich, Thank you for getting back to me. That's what I plan on doing. Paint it black, and when the car gets painted, overspray on the rails.

Keep the overspray off the frame rails as these cars were painted off the frame. Paint on the rails looks like a sloppy repair job. You might want to try to get a look at a car that is a suvivor to see what it looks like. We usually paint the black first. Then if originality is our goal, while the black is still wet or at least "tacked up", we shoot color on the floor from the side, duplicating the "Look" of originality.
