: 1966 Chevelle SS Hood
autobuff Jan 17th, 01, 7:29 PM OK gentlemen, I need your help. Am building 66 SS Convert clone. Was reading Paul Herd's SS Chevelle restoration guide and came upon this (pg 102):
"two different hoods were available in 1966. Most cars used the Malibu hood p no. 3874746; however near the end of production this was replaced with p no. 3896559 (the scooped hood)"
Does this mean there are '66 SS cars running around with legit flat hoods? I was going to put an SS hood on the car but am starting to like the look of the flat hood. So again the question, are there '66 SS cars with malibu flat hoods out there? Thanks!
bb67H-D Jan 17th, 01, 7:46 PM I have the same book and read about the early '66 SS hoods.Anyways I'am not a '66 buff, but I have found more than one incorrect piece of info in that book. I would put the SS hood on your clone they are sweet looking hoods and will make your '66 just a little sweeter, JMO.

Steve R Jan 17th, 01, 8:40 PM I had a friend who was really into 66 SS's, he once showed me a couple of SS hoods one of which had the inserts sit slightly lower than the other. I am not sure if this is accurate, but there was a difference that would be easiily missed without a side by side comparison. That might be what the author meant to point out.

Hot66ss Jan 17th, 01, 8:59 PM The 66 SS was never produced with the flat malibu hood. There where 2 different SS hoods though. In very early production of the 66 SS hood they had 3 cutouts under the hood (talking about the cut outs where the hood insulation goes). Also on the early hoods the SS "scoop pieces" sat above the surface of the hood. They were having problems with the hoods bending and deflecting at the hood hinge area. Here is when the "later style" SS hood comes in, they stopped cutting out the 2 side inserts under the hood only leaving the center one open, this was done for strength and cured the bending problem. In the process on this renovation of the hood they recessed in the SS hood scoops. People with the old style hood could go to the dealer and have it replaced if they were having problems with it bending, but nonetheless there still are a few running around on the early 66 SS cars that were never traded in for the new style.
Hope I didn't confuse anyone

66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Jan 19th, 01, 6:30 AM You did fine Thomas. That is correct and Chuck Hanson recently did a nice little story on this particular question in the ACES magazine, CHEVELLE WORLD...two versions of the 66 SS hood.

RatPowr Jan 19th, 01, 8:36 AM Nice info, and I also read that article about the hoods. Seems I have the early style SS hood! Do you guys think they are more rare?

66Super Jan 21st, 01, 9:38 PM Shoot! I must have the early version. Mine is bent at the hinges, Since it was purschaed new for export I'm sure it was never exchanged. Now I am curious as to what the second version looks like. Does anyone know how to cure the "bends"?
RatPowr Jan 22nd, 01, 8:16 AM I have the early style SS hood but there are no bends in mine ( I guess due to lighter than usual springs)

jrlars Jun 14th, 06, 6:00 PM A little confussed, thought early style had 5 cutouts not 3, louvers sit on top, same hood used for Malibu Part # 8774746.
Late hood, 3 cutouts, different than Malibu hood # 3896558 NO reseassed area for louvers , SS hood Part #3896559 which has the reseassed area for the louvers.
