: Exactly WHAT was in Waltrip's intake?

'The substance was found during Sunday's inspection. Adding the substance, described by NASCAR as an oxygenate, would boost the octane in the fuel, thus making the engine run better at higher horsepower.'

What was in there?

Jet fuel.

There not sure. This is from NASCAR's site.
Before qualifying began Pemberton said an inspector in NASCAR's engine checking area "caught a substance inside" the car's manifold in its initial pass through inspection.

Pemberton said, "We didn't know what it was," so that manifold was immediately seized and would be shipped to NASCAR's tech center in Concord, N.C., for analysis

I've heard "Jet A" and also Sterno (jellied denatured alcohol).......... don't know if we'll ever "really" know for sure. To show how fast this gets around, look at this site.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sterno Maybe a new "sponsor" opportunity :)

It appears to be some type of exotic fuel additive that would provide higher HP but they are still testing it.

won't it be a hoot if they find out it was blow-by oil? wonder what they would do then? Waltrip made it in the the 150, I was hoping the "old guy" would also. Guess it is my age showing. To see him complete the 500, even last would have made my day.

Got a laugh out of waltrip spinning Jr. out. If that had been Sr. Waltrip would be scraping his car off the wall instead of getting ready for Sunday. :D

I can't see it being Jet A. Jet A is just a fuel between #2 Diesel and #1 Diesel. It's closer to #1 but with even less parrafin and a different additive pack to allow it to operate in the cold environment at high altitude. #2 Diesel has more BTU content.

I've run Jet A in truck diesel engines back in my "really poor trucker" days. You used to be able to buy a tankful or two from the tank transport drivers for cheap. Actually, the truck didn't run as well as it did on #2, and got slightly less mileage, but they'd sell it to you for beer money.

Now, Sterno is a different subject. It may be oxygenated but I'm not sure. That would help in those restrictor engines which have a tough enough time breathing. Any additional oxygen would help.

Not jet fuel according to Pemberton. Why do the drivers already in the race even drive in the 150's and take a chance in crashing their cars to have to go to a backup car and to the end of the pack? Dumb if you ask me.

I DON'T CARE WHAT THE HECK IT WAS!
I LOVE NASCAR RACING---------------BUT I'M GETTING SICK OF NASCAR's CONTINUALLY CHANGING RULES, ESPECIALLY RULES AGAINST CHEATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm 100% in favor of letting the teams develop their own innovation, call it cheating, whatever, just let them develop whatever makes the car go faster.
ALSO, I'm totally opposed to NASCAR not allowing, and punishing the drivers for, them to duke it out! That is an absolute bunch of crap. They will let these guys drive 190+mph, and run the extreme risk of permanent injury-------------or even death----------------------BUT THEY WON'T LET THEM PUNCH ON EACH OTHER AND CAUSE A COUPLE OF BUMPS OR BRUISES! C'mon NASCAR, where in God's name is the logic in that????????????????
Do they really and truly believe that a fist in the face or gut is going to cause more injury than 190mph into a concrete wall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WAKE UP PEOPLE, GET REALISTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh ya, and I just now emailed this message to NASCAR!

Because if they don't race in the 150's they start at the end of the line. Last sunday's qualifiying determines pole and outside pole. Everybody from 3rd on back have to race in the 150's to determine starting positions for the 500 for 3rd thru 43rd. If you win the first 150, you start 3rd in the 500. If you win the second 150, you start 4th in the 500 and so on back to 43rd.

Randy

Randy has hit it on the head. If you read the fine print, Sterno is an oxidizer and a fuel. A one-two punch it looks like.

Glad he didn't get away with it, but I'm glad to see the Ol' Smokey Yunick attitude is still alive and well in NASCAR (even if I'm not a fan anymore...sorry NASCAR, you lost me with all the idiot & greedy moves over the years).

Maybe NASCAR does'nt want to get sued by the NHL ! ;)

Seriously though, how could coating your intake with jet fuel or any other substance provide any sort of HP advantage? This smells like a witch hunt to me!

It has nothing to do with whether they would injure each other with a fist or not, it has all to do with the fact that it is on TV and children watch. These drivers are hero's to children, and having their hero's duke it out may not be the best lesson for kids.

Simply. If they coated the intake with an oxidizer that mixes with fuel, you now have fuel that is more oxygen rich and therefore is basically defeating the restrictor plate.

No witch hunt involved. It's basic automotive. More oxygen in the fuel means more horsepower.

Fine!
NOW, take that same philosophy and explain to me how it applies (or actually DOES NOT apply) to kids watching their wrestling heros on TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Considerably more dukin' it out there!

OR, how about the football heros bashing each other-----------------that kids watch, or, even more so, the hockey heros that kids watch!
NOPE, I disagree, let the NASCAR drivers duke it out------------it would be massive entertainment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I guarantee you the kids would REALLY align themselves with a hero!

So, I repeat, NOT letting the drivers duke it out is a bunch of crap!

I don't think they coated the intake with anything.
I think they had some exotic fuel additive in the fuel cell.
The press is calling it Jet fuel but it is probably a more exotic fuel then that.
The inspector saw somthing funny inside the intake manifold while inspecting the restricter plate. They made Mike's team change the intake and intake was impounded. He ran the car to qualify then the car was impounded and the substance was found again.

They used to run exotic fuels in F1 until it was banned
The fuel was good for a few extra HP

Well, my thoughts are that any parent that doesn't make it well known to his kids or doesn't even realize it himself that wrestling is fake, isn't going to turn out the best of children as it is.

Fighting is not allowed in football either, as well as in hockey. If you watch either you would see that in both sports penalties are handed out for fighting. Yes, the players may fight in hockey, but it is against
the rules. Tackling in football is a far cry from throwing an angry fist, and kids know the diffrence.

Just my opinion. To me the problem isn't about whether or not guys hit each other in the sport they choose, for me as the parent of two little ones, it's about not teaching my kids that when someone ticks you off it's ok to throw fists. Its about not teaching my kids that it's ok to break the rules in organized sports.

I don't follow Nascar all that much, but listening to the guys at work wonder about what was in the intake was cool. I might start watching I'm glad to see behind all those sponsors and all that, they're still hard core. What if it was Sterno? I bet some of ya'll would try it. I'm betting it's not.
As far as the comment on fighting in Nascar. Shouldn't the parents be the ones tasked with teaching the children right and wrong? Not the TV.
If someone almost kills you, being a dumbass, wouldn't you want to punch them in the chops? If someone punches you in the chops, even for being a dumbass, shouldn't you be able to defend yourself? Make sense? So many are unconsiously neutered by the dang ole' Television. I swear.

Whatever it is/was, it's just stupid. Don't these guys know by now they're gonna get caught??

BTW, these NFL/NBA/MBL/NASCAR etc people are NOT heroes. Heroes are the people who fought for this country in WWII, Korea, etc.

One more thing while I'm rolling; SCREW the greedy France family of NASCAR -- they make me puke. How come the old racers who gave the best years of their lives to these b**turds don't get any kind of pension from these Billionaires??!!

It'd be like trying to burn kerosene or diesel in your gas engine.

By the way, just for the record, I despise NASCAR for becoming what it is today. The cheating aspects of NASCAR interest me 1,000 times more than watching a boring race.

Does the sterno thing in the intake (if it's true) have an application is street/strip cars?

Now that the NATIONAL association of S T O C K car racing has J A P A N E S E cars, I'm ready to throw up my hands, gag and shake my head in disgust.

But, what's sweet is that the Jap cars have been slow and now HAVE to cheat to just qualify! That makes my day!

If it were real men's racing in stock bodied cars, turn em all loose and the fastest car and the best driver wins. Period. THAT'S racing!

Oh yeah? WHERE's ALL THE PROFITS GO? J A P A N !!!!! When will you people get it? Do you know WHY Japan builds cars here instead of over there? To beat our import aggreements and we have CHEAPER labor than they do!

Where do they locate their plants? In the deep south, where labor rates are cheap, housing costs are low and where GOVERMENTS GIVE THEM HUGE TAX BREAKS! Does Michigan give GM a freaking tax break? NO!

All good points, BUT it sure as hell doesn't make me feel any better about all the "outsourcing" that the big three are doing now a days, it's just sad....

Personally I could care less where the profit dollars go, fact is they go to the fat cats who don't pay their FAIR share in taxes anyway and that doesn't help any of US....The domestic jobs are more important to us as I see it anyway..

Look at all the free advertising this has given NASCAR. Everybody takes their turn being the bad boy and everyone wins. Everyone is watching the Waltrip deal just as it was planned.
