OK. One of my cars has 2 coats of paint on it. Both are new. Long story but the car was painted with correct color, but lousy job so it was immediately scuffed and re-painted with close,,,, but wrong color. graemlins/clonk.gif

So...I want to have the correct color on the car. I plan to put a vinyl top on the car too...which was original. I also plan to replace the hood and remove the trunk lid for blasting, if needed.

My question is....can I sand or otherwise remove most or all of the top coat of paint,,,then have someone prep and re-paint the bottom coat without making a mess or opening a huge can of worms?

TIA!

Bob, It was a modern basecoat/clearcoat job. PPG. Other than that, I don't know. :(

If the condition of the paint that is on the car now is good then I would block the car out with 400 and apply a sealer to all surfaces. Condition of the paint meaning no peeling, cracking etc. How old is the paint that is on there now? IMO there is no sense in stripping the paint off if it is in good shape, unless there is a major buildup of materials or the paint has deteriorated. Bob

Thanks Bob.

The paint is less than 2 years old. There is no peeling or cracking. However, it is quite built up (thick) already.....softening the lines of the car quite a bit. I was hoping to improve the lines of the car as well.

You need to factor in HOW much paint is on the now.
Too much paint can lead to several problems.
PPG mil limit is 14mils, after that number PPG washes their hands. Can you get by with more paint YES, but its not a good idea.

One option might be plastic media, a good operator can remove a single layer of paint.

To me getting a third paint job is too much, its time to remove some of that paint. A typcially repaint is 4.5-5.5 mils(just base and clear).
So factor in yout two prevoius paint jobs at say 5.0mils each, thats 10mils on now, now you do another repaint you are at 15mils.
