: Rear Suspension
BadYellow67 Feb 13th, 07, 4:41 PM I recently put a rear sway bar in my chevelle ('67 malibu). I havent driven it yet so notice the changes, but someone told me that i should box the controll arms, in addition to adding the sway bar. Would it make that big of a difference?? Thanks
aukai Feb 13th, 07, 4:55 PM boxed control arms is not for handeling it is more to handle the torque and deflexsion new bushings help and geometry is importent thats the way I understand it.
BadYellow67 Feb 13th, 07, 5:14 PM well before the sway bar..., if i was going about 15mph and floored it, the card jerked and pulled so bad that i decided to get a rear sway bar. Its got a fair amount of torque, 3:336 gears, and a 700r4 so it likes to take off fairly decently. would the boxing aid in controlling the body twist, allong with the sway bar?
Brettd85 Feb 13th, 07, 6:31 PM The boxing is also there to support the sway bar. It needs to have spacers so you dont crush it as the bolts go all the way through. The hole would surely enlarge itself or crack if not done right.
Do a search. You need to weld in spacers, and then weld in a plate to box it, and run bolts all the way through.
BadYellow67 Feb 13th, 07, 6:39 PM I know all about the bushing, and they are in, but do i have to box the controll arms, and if not, would it be worth while to do so?

I guess you wouldnt HAVE too, but I recommend it, thats how they came. Migh as well make it more rigid, its only going to help... and its not that hard.
BadYellow67 Feb 13th, 07, 7:06 PM If i can find the time i will do so if its reccomended, the problem is to find the time, daily driver, and packing up to move soon, thanks for all the help!
Keith Tedford Feb 13th, 07, 7:12 PM If you are just bolting the sway bar to the side of the control arm, the arm will eventually start to crack around the bolt. Ask me how I know.
SS70ElCaminoOwner Feb 14th, 07, 9:56 AM I highly recommend you box the lowers. It is not hard to do see this link. You can do it yourself or there are people that will do it for you.
