I'm not sure which forum to post this in but here it goes. I'm going to go look at a 1965 Chevelle the weekend. It is sappose to be a matching numbers car. How can I verify this when I go look at it. Thanks for the help.

Unless it is an L79 car (350hp/327ci car) there really aren't many number to match. Number matching typically means a portion of the VIN appears on the engine and transmission indicating those components were originally installed in that particular car. However, Chevy didn't stamp the partial VINs into the engine in 1965 unless it was an L79 engine. The partial VIN may appear on the transmission, but it's not always there on a non-L79 car.
If it's a Kansas City car the cowl tag can tell you what some of the options installed were which you can verify against the equipment currently on the car, but the only numbers matching you can do will involve the codes on the engine pad and the casting dates on the block, heads and rear axle vs. the build date on the cowl tag.
If all this sounds too complicated, your best bet is to either write down or get photos of the cowl tag and the engine pad (just below the front edge of the passenger side cylinder head) and post them up on Tag Team and we can provide more data. There are numbers on the transmission and rear axle but they can be hard to locate and harder to read unless everything is new and clean and you know exactly where to look.
Good luck and let us know what you find. Photos are always helpful.

Lily,
I'd be happy to go along to check it out - I'm not an expert detective like some really are here, but I've learned a lot from these guys in the last couple of years.
