Engine size didn't appear in the VIN until 72. Check the machined pad in front of the passenger side head. There should be a stamped letter/number combination something like T0401CCA. First letter is the engine assembly plant and could be either T for Tonawanda, NY. or V or F for Flint, MI. Next 4 numbers are month/day. Last three (sometimes two) suffix letters are code to indicate the engine size, horsepower, and transmisstion type. You can check the suffix against the listing of Engine Codes on my ChevelleStuff.com site. If what you have isn't listed, chances are it's not a Chevelle engine but maybe one from an Impala, Nova, Camaro, truck, etc.
