: door latch mechanism failure

Both the driver-side and passenger-side door latch mechanisms have become impossible to operate on my '71 coupe. Drivers door is completely locked- neither the key, button, or inside door handle can open it. What's the possible cause and how can I open the door without destroying the door panel? Is there supposed to be some sort of plastic tip on the rod running from the outside button to the release mechanism?

On my 68 there is a little spring-like thing that broke. I used a long flat screwdriver to get it opened. Roll the window down (need a flashlight). Look down inside the door; you should see where the rod's hooking. Find the one for the inside door handle on the latch. Use the screwdriver to push around that area. It will take some time and patience.

Frank,

You said the "drivers" door was completely locked. Can you get the passenger side open? If so, you could remove the door panel and see what you're looking for on the driver's side.

Not trying to be insulting, just throwing out an idea.

Good luck,
Jim

One thing you might try is to unscrew that thing that unlocks/locks the door from the inside and get a hook down in there and try to move the mechanism to the unlock position and the door might open. Door panels are not easy to work in espcially with the door panel on. Good luck i know it might take some tinkering but you should be able to get it off without destroying your door panel. You might even be able to take out your drivers side seat and remove the door panel with the door shut.
