: What's My 70 SS worth?
Chevy_Rat Feb 10th, 07, 2:49 PM Hi all,
I have been toying with the idea of selling my 70 Chevelle SS; I've had it for a number of years now but I hardly drive it anymore due to constant travel due to my job. (I've spent over two years in Iraq since Nov 2003 and recently started to wonder what it might bring.
Here's the skinny on it:
1970 Chevelle SS
L34 396/350
M21 Close Ratio 4 Speed
12 bolt 3:31 gear
Red on Red
Canadian Built
Z25 Cowl Tag
Have Original documents including PoP, Warranty (english and French), owners manual, build sheet.
Car is matching numbers, throughout, (engine, vin, tranny, rear-end, ect.. Oct 69)
All parts have correct date codes like the carb, heads, block ect. Everything I could check for codes matches the overall assembly build date of Nov 69. That's what the blue drivers side door sticker states Nov 69
Car is in great shape, not sure of mileage (odometer shows 61,000) probably gone around at least once.
Had the engine (upper half rebuilt) new valves, seats, bowl work, guides, seals ect.. about three years or 400 miles ago..
No new engine pictures other than what's on the link and that engine pic is old. I have since detailed the engine and bay (repainted as close to factory specs as possible) and corrctly re-attached the wheel well dust covers with correct staples. The engine and bay sparkle like new...
Even the center caps are (I believe) original with the raised SS on them.
SS Rims are date and coded correct.
You can still see the factory lead lines for the rear quarters to roof line. So, it has most if not all it's original tin.
Paint is in good shape but of course it probably could use a make over. (don't know when it was painted last).
No cowl Induction or hood pins. I was told that the early build 70's came through without hood pins.
So guys, please give me your opnions/questions, I'm interested in hearing the good, bad, and the ugly
Thanks Much
mr 4 speed Feb 10th, 07, 3:29 PM 38K+ up to 48K IMHO
The Canadian build and matching numbers make the car worth all the money.
if I where you,I would just hold unto to it.
Beautiful car btw
SS4Real Feb 10th, 07, 7:15 PM I agree with mr 4 speed....between $40k and $50k. Nice car.....
Luis Feb 10th, 07, 7:45 PM Hi, Top
If I'm not mistaken the non cowl induction hood came without the hood pins. Top, I was going to sell mine about three months ago. Got plenty of adivise not to sell it, and I didn't. Slowly, but surely I will fix it up. Mine has been paid off for 7 years now. If money is an issue sell it, but if not just keep it. They are more and more expensive every day. You will have sellers remorse and will not be able to find a Canadian one as easy. Hope you keep it and one day you, Rich, and I will display the Canadian trio.
Take care
Twins Fan Feb 10th, 07, 10:01 PM Bruce, that's a nice car you got there. As others have said, anywhere up to $50K sounds about right. IMO don't sell it, you know it's the only thing you think about while you're gone, well maybe the wife a little bit. What would get you through a trip to Iraq knowing there was no Chevelle to come home to?
I recognize those last three pictures you have of the car from Ft. Lewis, I was stationed there from 01 to 05 with 2/75. Looked up your profile and saw that you're retired Airborne Infantry. What units were you with, and what are you doing now that sends you over to the sandbox?
oldtimebaseballfan Feb 11th, 07, 9:51 AM Great looking car, pics are beautiful, and it's probably worth what everyone is saying...but remember, in that price range, people get very picky and everything will need to be correct and beautiful. You state that the car could use a re-do, so I take that to mean there are some flaws or work to be done.
Also the pool of potential buyers is smaller on an L34 car, in that price range.
When you get into the 40s and 50s, you are competing against the cars with bigger and/or higher HP engines.
I'm not saying you can buy a near perfect LS5 or L78 for 40 or 50k. I'm saying that there are LS5s and L78s out there that might be in that price range if they need some work.
If someone is looking to spend 40 or 50k and they see an L34, LS5 and L78 for sale, and each car needs work done to it, which car are you going to buy?
This years Barrett-Jackson had a number of 70 L34 Chevelles that sold from $41,000-$49,000. One of those was a beautiful unrestored original 39,000 mile car. Craig Jackson said that he was a little disappointed in the prices for mid year Corvettes and big block cars.
I hope you can get a high price for your car, if you sell it. Because that keeps the value of the 70 Chevelles up. Since I have some 70s, I am always glad to see other 70 Chevelles sell for high prices.
Good luck with whatever you do.
Chevy_Rat Mar 1st, 07, 4:52 PM Sorry for replying so late; thanks for all the replies and comments. I also tend to think the car's value is somewhere in that area. It is a sweet car for sure.
Actually, the paint looks pretty darn good considering it could be over 12 years old...
Luis, I tell ya, I'm just not sure if I can continue to care for it and appreciate the car for what it is. I'm constanly going away on business. Just think, this summer will be the first time I'll actually be home to enjoy it since 2003.
I know what you are saying and that's where I'm and a roadblock, one part of me says keep the old gal and the other says sell it to someone that will take the time and appreciate her; show her off. I just don't know yet. It's a struggle But with that said it would be very cool to have you Rich and myself displaying our Canadian SS's on the same field.
Luis, it's not the money in the least (over two years in Iraq as a Network Engineer contractor has made me a nice chunck of change). Maybe I should just put the cover over her and walk away for a while and see if the passion returns or at least the time.. Let me think.......
Bottom line, I really appreciate everyone's comments and their input; just what I thought. Now to contemplate ... can someone pass a beer.
hmott Mar 1st, 07, 5:04 PM :beers:
MEJ1990TM Mar 1st, 07, 8:41 PM I hope you can get a high price for your car, if you sell it. Because that keeps the value of the 70 Chevelles up. Since I have some 70s, I am always glad to see other 70 Chevelles sell for high prices.
Good luck with whatever you do.
Im just going to come right out and say it that is the attitude about these cars that pisses me off, along with many other people I know. Its people like you that are going to make it so the average person can't even afford a plain jane '70 malibu with a 307 in it and no options. But that is a very good looking car and the only way I would get rid of it is over my cold dead body. :-)
Augustboy2009 Mar 1st, 07, 9:03 PM I would keep it. Just put a cover over it and forget about it for a while. If it's stored properly, just think how much more it will be worth in say 5 to 10 years.
ss1970chev454 Mar 2nd, 07, 12:51 PM Agreed. It's truely a beautiful car, Don't sell it.
Like someone already stated. Just tuck it away for awhile until you have more time. One thing is for sure. You have to make time for the things you enjoy. Life is too short. Shorter for those who give their life protecting someone elses freedoms.
If caring for it is an issue. I'm alittle short on garage space right now but I'll make the room!:D
72 malibu Mar 2nd, 07, 1:53 PM Keep it! You'll be sorry when it is gone and all you can say is "here is a pic of the one I had". I would be more than happy to store it for you as well, just gotta move the wifes car out of the garage!
Chevy 70 SS vert Mar 2nd, 07, 11:13 PM Nice car. Makes me wish I would have bought one years ago! When they were plentiful and not all that expensive.
springs209 Mar 3rd, 07, 9:06 AM i disagree he needs to sell it , and sell it fast the longer it sit,s the worst it gets, it will need new gasket,s ,carb rebuilt, etc sell it , and sell it to me lol

Thanks MuchI'd say about 12grand...and I'll be there Monday to pick it up....... :D
MEJ1990TM Mar 3rd, 07, 4:14 PM Ill buy that car how Joe Dirt bought that hemi road runner. I will give you everything I have in my pockets for it. :-)
nb707 Mar 4th, 07, 12:49 AM i think 60k to 65 k for that car. why ?. just like the the one guy said go try and find one like it. all the doc, and gm of canada to prove it. with all the fake doc going around you got a real winner. very very few for sale. which will drive the price up. really nice car.
Chevy_Rat May 2nd, 07, 5:42 PM Well, I believe I have come to a decision to sell the Chevlle. I think it's the best and hopefully someone will have the time to enjoy her more than me.
Thought long and hard on this and concluded that having her just sit and not enjoyed is not the way to go. I know I'll feel like crap afterwards but it's for the best.
So, what options do I have in selling, Ebay, classified ads, consignments? Thought Ebay might be the way but never sold anything on there
Thanks all for the earlier comments. Now to settle a good asking price.
Bruce
Detroit Al May 2nd, 07, 7:34 PM Make sure that when you sell it, you will have something else to replace it. I had a '65 Corvette for the last 12 years, but wasn't driving it or having any more fun owning it. Sold it and went looking for a BBC Chevelle or Ford. Found a '65 Chevelle that was already Pro-streeted, and fell in love with a car again. Sounds like your Velle doesn't make your heart beat faster anymore. Nothing like a fresh new love to rekindle your car passion. You might try selling it on Racing Junk.com. Good amount of readers. Good luck!
Ebay is probably your best bet for exposure nationwide. Racingjunk isn't a bad suggestion either. No matter where you post it put a high number on it to thin out some of the virtual tire kickers. :D Take really good BIG pics as those ads/auctions always seem to do better and get more attention. Also put some sort of water mark in the pic so it doesn't show up on some other auction or scam. Just in case you haven't paid attention, do not take any cashiers checks from foreign addresses or for more than the selling price :)
Oh one last thing check with a local Chevelle or car club as there may be some one there who is looking for your ride too.
Good Luck.
oldtimebaseballfan May 2nd, 07, 9:49 PM You could put a free ad on here in the classifieds.
rjt427 May 2nd, 07, 10:12 PM Keep it, I had a 66 supersport for over 32 years and I sold it two years ago.Now I miss it like crazy....I am looking for a 70 now, good luck in what ever you do.....
MEJ1990TM May 3rd, 07, 1:07 AM 32 years!? Why would you ever sell it. :(
rjt427 May 3rd, 07, 8:32 AM I wanted a vacation home down south,so I sold it to buy the house. Now I am looking for a 70. But now I really miss my car.......
tidmack May 3rd, 07, 1:29 PM I'd also check out carsonline.com. Very reasonable ad with up to about 30 pictures. They get over a half million page views a day. . .probably adds up to about 80-90,000 people a day checking out their site.
Jeff
Chevy_Rat May 3rd, 07, 6:01 PM Thanks for the suggestions. Now I need to seriously think about pricing it. Thought upwards of 50K because I can prove it's authenticity, it's numbers matching. and she's in great shape too. How may cars like that out there. My guess is not too many.
Man, this is hard to do..... Guess I need to take a bunch of pics now..
Thanks again all.
kettbo May 3rd, 07, 6:47 PM Bruce,
I have a nice digital camara. Bring her to work the first day without rain (yeh, right!!!) and I'll be happy to take a number of shots of your car over lunch. Too bad my photographer pal and fellow 70 Elky owner Matt is working down in CALI.
I'm not planning to sell my 68 RatVette I've owned for 16 years, brought back from the dead. The kids would kill me! It would be like selling a family member!!!! Like your Chevelle, I fear for the car almost as much as take pleasure in driving her. Almost. The non-matching engine has way more nutz than a stock 390 horse engine would! Anyway, when the nice weather eventually arrives here in WA, I'll bring the RatVette in.
I dropped by your building yesterday with the Elky, guess you had left already for lunch.
George
Chevy_Rat May 4th, 07, 7:38 PM Thanks for the offer George. It's gonna have to wait a couple of weeks because I head to Alaska this Sunday for two weeks. Shouldn't matter anyway with our weather here; figure it will rain most of that two weeks anyway.
I'll hit ya up when I get back and when there's a nice day I'll bring her in
Bruce
bulletpruf May 5th, 07, 1:07 PM E-bay gets the most exposure. If it doesn't sell there, you'll have plenty of serious buyers who will see it. I also recommend racingjunk.com - lots of exposure there, too, and it's free.
Good luck,
Scott
vintageracer May 5th, 07, 1:49 PM SELL IT!!!!
70 Chevelles are for sale everyday across this great country of ours. Good one and bad ones alike. Since you do not drive the car, take a BIG picture of the car and hang it on the wall in the garage. That way the car will still be there every time you go to the garage after the car is gone. When AND IF the urge ever strikes again to own a 70 SS, go buy one!
The chances are EXCELLENT that these cars ARE NOT going to enjoy the future appreciation that we have seen in the last several years and therefore your opportunity for return on your money will be greater with other investments in the near future in my opinion. I still think the value of these cars has reached a zenith in this cycle and will begin to depreciate since most everyone that has wanted a 70SS AND can afford one has purchased one. Reduction of any consumer debt you have would be an excellent use of the proceeds from the sale of your car.
While the value of 70 SS's has reached a plateau, the cost of parts and restoration has not. Therefore it is foolish to restore one when you can buy a nice/correct/numbers car cheaper than you can restore one. That does not even consider the 2 years of grief, agony and expense called LABOR!
While sentimental value ALWAYS plays into these decisions, that is the worst emotion upon which to make your decision. Give lot's of consideration to the other things in your life that are MUCH more important than some old car!
Thank you for your service to our country. I am sure your family has sacrificed alot during the last several years so do what is best for your family when making a decision about the sale of this car.
Dreams and priorities change as we live our life. I have sold numerous cars that I have owned for years and never looked back! When I wanted another car there was ALWAYS a car just as good or better available and I made the purchase.
This is a family decision, get everyone involved.
As far as value, I think everyone has above has given you good guidance.
Good luck with your decision!
Augustboy2009 May 5th, 07, 4:04 PM well said, Vintageracer. I will never buy a heap and restore it myself again. I'm just gonna buy an already pimped car and make the minor changes to make it my own style.
Bob, that is one sweet ride. Love the sound.
BIGBLOCK70Z May 6th, 07, 8:50 AM This Is A Great Question. If You Need To Sell It For The Money. Then Chances Are You Will Never Be Able To Replace It. Its Not Like Selling A New Car. It Is A Piece Of History And A Nice Piece At That.
Well. I had the same delima in 69 after getting home from Nam and was on my way back again for my third tour. I got married and sold mine and made the biggest mistake of my live. Selling the car that is. I have regetted it all my life. If you don't need to sell it DON'T. Don't let sombody else Keep it for you either. I think the military will store it for you and if they don't . You should. Keep the Car. Retired Military Man Talking here.
