Hi Martin, I will be doing some bodywork on the '70 this weekend and was wondering what product I should use for the "skim" coat of filler. I have decided to try and get this body as straight as I can before shooting my budget paint job:

PPG OMNI BC/CC Cortez Silver

BTW, I found this when I did a search on this subject, It is something you stated a few years ago and it describes my intent perfectly:
Quote..."As I have said in the past on this subject, just make your car straight, paint it and have fun. Any person that says you shouldn't put any filler on your car either hasn't got a clue. Or he has a half finished "perfect" car in the garage that he will likely never drive even if he did actually finished it.

John, the skim coat is normally a POLY GLAZE product. The difference between that(POLY GLAZE) and regular filler is how fine the filler material is ground up. The finer the material is ground the easier it is to sand and feather edge out.

Just a few products that would be POLY glazes would be evercoat's metal glaze, honey glaze and a few others. USC's glaze is called blue icing I believe. I like a product made by UPOL called dolphin glaze, mainly cus it comes in a tube much like a toothpaste tube and I can very easily knead and mix the product together. Unlike the others that come in small metal cans that make mixing somewhat hard to mix when compared to that tube.

But dont compare POLY glazes to spot putties. Spot putties are a NON hardened product, unlike POLY glazes. Basically spot putties are lacquer primer, which will later down the road show themselves. Its best to avoid those spot putties at all costs.
