Does anyone have any rea  sons why a flux core welder should not be used for putting on a new quarter panel?

I tried flux core on some floor pans. It just blew holes in the sheetmetal and made a mess. Its a lot harder to control your weld. Flux core is usually .030, thats a little big i think for sheetmetal i went to .023 with gas and never looked back.

At a seminar it was said to cause contamination under painted surfaces.

Gas sheilding is better, somewhat tough to do it in the driveway with a breeze blowing though.

for sure gas welding is better, but I have always been able to do whatever I need with my little
mig welder using flux core wire. I can't remember
what the smallest flux core wire I could get was but it was .030 or less and worked fine for welding patch panels, ect. I would spend the money and get a gas setup right away, but you can do it without if you have to.

Well, I plan on taking a whole weekend and devoting it to welding this quarter and filler panel I bought awhile ago. I plan on shopping around for wire so...
I also plan to go over all weld areas with POR15 before I spray it with epoxy filler spray.

Nothing! I've welded about 12 sets of 1/4s with flux core. Just make sure to wire brush very well after welding.

It is just a basic choice. Co2/argon mix is cleaner and smokes less, does now work well outside if there is the slightest breeze. Flux seems to splatter more is harder for me to see what I am welding and needs much more clean up after.

My flux welds always look like total crap, while my gas welds look less like crap, more of a half crap. :D

Like everyone else has metioned, flux will work, but gas welds will be much cleaner.
