Is the shift light an autometer product designed to work with that particular tach? Any instructions with it?

If the tach has settings capabilities, then the light should just plug into the tach. If the light itself has "the intelligence" , in other words the cirucuitry itself to adjust what rpm setting you want the light to come on, then it should be wired into the distributor, power and ground and work independently of the tachometer.

It depends what you have
