: Conversion from Bench to bucket seats w/ Floor shift
HILL_SS Feb 5th, 07, 6:00 PM I am looking into making a dash converstion from my malibu setup to and SS dash, and along with this I am wanting to change my front bench seat to buckets and run a console with a floor shifter.
Im sure many have done this to their chevelles, that can give me tips on finding some kind of conversion kit, or where you got your parts for your conversion.
So here are my questions:
1.) Best place/places to find a kit or places to buy peices to put together myself.
2.) How hard is it to convert the colum shift to the floor shifter? TIPS?
If someone could make some comments on doing this, that would be a big help also.
3.) What have some of you guys that have done this spent on doing this conversion.
Thanks again!

Merlin Feb 6th, 07, 11:12 AM Hill_SS,
I have done this conversion, although it was on a 68. Should be very similar for a 71. My first suggestion would be to get your hands on parts catalogs and factory assembly manuals and read, read, read. This particular topic has been discussed many times and at great length on this site, so you may want to do a search or searches, and again read as much as you can find.
To my knowledge, there is no kit per se. At least not a comprehensive one. Almost everything you will need is available reproduction. Some is also available as original NOS parts, usually from individuals who have collected this stuff over the years. And finally, it is fairly widely available as used stuff from salvage yards and/or folks on places like ebay. The cost for such a conversion can vary from several hundred to several thousand dollars, depending primarily on where and how you buy your parts, and how much of the work you do yourself. If you have basic mechanical and electrical skills, or friends who do and are willing to help, this conversion project is a very doable thing. Don't get me wrong... it's a great deal of work to do right, but it can be done!
Again, I think the best first move, would be to get your hands on the reading material that is available, and familiarize yourself with the process. Parts catalogs from places like Ground-Up, Year-One, and OPGI are very helpful in the education process.
Hope this helps a bit...

Parts places, GU,OPG, GM dealer for some stuff, etc...

It isn't difficult, TIPS I recommend using the search function a ton of info there

console 250.00, shifter 50.00, cable 30.00, steering column 100.00, shifter brackets 30.00, bucket seat brackets 50.00, bucket seats and recovering 500.00, console harness extension 35.00, get brackets welded to floor 15.00 feeling of accomplpishment when done, PRICELESS(couldn't resist)
It's not hard to due just take your time and it will turn out fine.
Thanks again!
Good luck, Pete
