I took a 77 400 with HEI and swapped the motor into my 69 Chevelle, I now have the issue of wiring it up..... so let me ask what goes to what??
I think the BATT side of the HEI cap goes to the 12 volt sourse so Im thinking the IGN fuse in the fuse box.
Then I have the two yellow wires that WERE on the starter....I dont need eather of them anymore??? One of the yellow wires went to the OLD coil, and the other went inside the car...
Im guessing that they purple wire will go on the "S" side of the starter and then of course the positive battery cable.
Does anything go off the TACH side of the HEI cap besides the Tach?
And is there anything I am missing?? no grounds or anything??
THanks in advance for info , I cant wait to get this sucker running again!! Remy
Everyhing except two yellow wires sounds right. Don't know why the second one would be going inside
With the HEI you shouldn't need the yellow bypass wire that ran from the starter "R" terminal to the old coil's + terminal so it can be disconnected at both ends.
One thing to think about, connecting to the "IGN" on the fuse block will work until the fuse blows.
Nothing besides the tach wire goes on the Tach terminal.

Well I traced the one yellow wire back up and on the firewall it turns orange, then it goes inside..if that helps...

Also one more thing,,,,,from the swap I have the newer connection on the alternator but it wont hook up to my 69 Chevelle's alt plug, do I need to have this newer type plug on the HEI system, or can I swap in my Alt from my 69 and hook it up with the factory plug and go? Thanks

Good point. I just did this swap on my '69, and I hooked it up to the fuse box. I'll make sure that I keep some extra fuses in the glove box.

You could use the 69 alternator and no wiring change would be necessary assuming it fits the mounting and the belts line up OK (which it should)
I think I would do away with the voltage regulator and change the plug to one that fits the internal regulated alternator if I were doing it.
There have been a lot of discussions on replacing an external regulated alternator to an internal regulated alternator if you do a search in this forum, you'll see.
Check out the tech reference on it

Actually the HEI and the alternator have nothing to do with each other.

I thank you guys, last night I got the whole thing wired up, and will throw in the radiator tonight and hopefully get the sucker started. Thank you for the wiring information I went straight home and wired it up without any slack time and I got it done before dark!! THanks again. Remy
