Trying to get ideas on center console.
Thinking about making mine out of padded vinyl covered plywood. I dont know what to do on the top, thinking like stainless steel or something.

I also want, Gauges, cup holders, Ratchet shifter, Power window buttons, Floor vents (maybe to rear seat also), Front speakers.

So if ya got any pics of center consoles, custom, modified, stock, post them up.

Here's a 2000 Blazer console I mocked in place with my B&M ratchet shifter still in place, I just wanted to see how it fit. (Don't mind the mess, I was tearing the car apart) I am going to run the stock Blazer shifter when I eventually put it in for good. It fit the floor really well and there is no emergency brake to ugly it up. It's graphite and actually matches the stock black very close but the flash makes it look quite a bit lighter.

I saw that when I searched Al, Its one of the only custom center console pics left when I searched. It looks really good and Ive thought about it but where could I put Window switches and front speakers? Also it looks like it sits high and might be a pain with a ratchet shifter or a stick shift car.
How does it feel?

Mine has something you might call custom. It's from a 3rd gen camaro. I could have finished it out better, but my red chevelle is more of a race car than a show car.

I have some pictures of nice one-off custom consoles, but I just don't have the resources to pull something too custom. That, and it would clash with the rest of my "junk". ;)

It sits real nice but I am 6'2" so it might be a tad too high for shorter people. I have the car completly tore down for paint & 1/4 replacement so I have not mounted it for good yet, Just showing you an option other than custom made. Still kind of a factory look.

I think both of yours looks great but also I forgot to add my interior is green, so most likely anything I get or do will have to be painted or dyed.

BLUE, i have been toying around with making my own console and the price (i was gonna do fiberglass) and hoping that the first one turned out just how i wanted really detoured me from going that route. I found that a 93-96 camaro has a really great console that has a part bolted to the top that i think will come really close to fitting up to the under side of my dash (71 chevelle) and it has a lot of room for stuff and they make ratchet shifters to fit these consoles!! The part that bolt to the top is made to hold cd cases and it would be a perfect place for gauges!!!

I dont have a pic on my computer but search on ebay!! The only thing is i dont know how well they fit our cars and also they have a provision cut out for a e-break lever!! So i dunno i was gonna fab up some stuff for it!! Good luck Let us know what ya do!!

Also look into an older (like around 99 or 98 montes) and the newer gtos!! Good luck again!!!

I am currently desiging the dash for my car right now here is a few pictures of a computer mock-up and the start of it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v302/blairf/dash2.gif
As you can see I am going for the TV screen built into the front part of the dash with toggle switches before the shifter. Two holders will be placed in the middle then an armrest/storage compartment, and at the end of the console im going to try and install another tv for the back passangers.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v302/blairf/dash1.jpg
The frame is constructed out of 3/4 plywood this is the lower section that will be mounted to floor. After the construction of the frame we will go ahead and wrap it then fiberglass away.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v302/blairf/dash2.jpg
As you can tell there is a gap between the floor and plywood that is pretty noticable. So we had to construct something that will be a filler.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v302/blairf/dash3.jpg
Running the plywood through the table saw we were able to remove the second layer of wood allowing a gap just wide enough to fit a think piece of wood into still giving it a flush finish.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v302/blairf/dash4.jpg
After the template was done we went ahead and cut out the wood perfect fit it squeezes about 1/4 inch into the plywood leaving plent of room to put some nails into it.

Ill go ahead and post some more pictuctures as we go on.

Here is a few to consider. A full console was made from front to back, holds air ride switch, power windows and emerg. brake and a tv and a/c vents for the rear.

a combination of wood and duraglass. It was then molded and wrapped with pleather to match the seats, door panels etc. We are in the process of doing a 69 GTO console and door panels. I will have pics on our web site soon.

will have finished pics tommorrow, I'm just playing with photobucket today to see how good it works, its got a 6-speed pattern aluminum plate I made. Its painted semi black now but later I want it painted with flames if I can find someone to do it in the Birmingham area. http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o132/chasesyc/IM000536.jpg

Here's my console finished up. I have been using it all summer & it really works well. The arm rest is perfect & the shifter is easy to operate. Cupholders come in handy also. I had to add a little spray foam under the carpet to add about 1/2" on each side of the tunnel but it was minimal. No mods to the console other than cutting the legs off the shifter mounting plate to get it slightly lower. The pictures show the car durring the re-assembly process so don't mind the mess.

Check out the latest Lowrider magazine. They did a whole speaker box buildup in a 70-72 El Camino that included a tricked out console.

Mine is just my stock one modified a bit. Not exactly custom but not stock either...

Hard to see in this pic but there are 4 switches mounted behind the shifter as well.

I ended up installing one out of a 96ish camaro. in my 70, I like it especially the 4 cup holders. It fits OK not the greatest and looks out of place but I like it.

and I have a 99 blazer console like Als above on my 71, but I also installed the 99 blazer seats which are power adjustable. I have yet to finish it up because im waiting on carpet and dont want to install carpet till I get a new windsheild installed (leaking but thats because its cracked and the gasket is trashed)

Did you have to do anything special to get the shift linkage on that shifter to connect to the original transmission?

Alwhite00
Mar 12th, 10, 6:31 AM
I actually had a B&M shifter on there and when I did the swap I just drilled one hole in the Blazer shifter and it bolted right up. The original Blazer shifter cable was cut when I got it but I can't see it being too big a deal using that. I am hopefully switching to a 200R4 this year and might need to do a little fab to get it to work but the Blazer is already set up for the 4 gears so it should work fine.
