I guess thats the correct term. I've also heard it refered to "aligator". the car had been repainted once before a long time ago. anyway the second coat has cracks in the paint over the entire car.like one giant spider web. I'm guessing the second paint was not compatible with the first and it wasnt sealed properly. I'm not going for a show quality job, on my 68 olds delmont and probably will do the macco special but I need to know if I need to totally remove the second layer of paint because of the cracking or can I hit it good with a d/a sander and seal it with something before being repainted. like I said I'm not wanting to put much money into the olds but want a better looking paint job. thanks for any advice.

i would try to remove as much of the bad paint as possible with the d/a. if the original paing isn cracked then id leave it. .just try not to overheat and warp the panels. did my honda this way then went to maaco and it still looks great..

Remove all paint down to bare metal. Start fresh with a quality paint system. Karl

Not an expect but I've heard it called "checked" paint. No cure but to sand it. Maaco can sand it for you but I like One-Day paint better out here.

It isn't a compatibility issue at all, it was trapped solvents that caused the problem. The cure, removal, plain and simple.

If you try to sand off just the top paint job you will find that it is VERY hard because it will likely plug up paper fast and just be a mess to deal with. As Karl said, I think it is time to get it over with and go to bare metal.

Look into "plastic media blasting" in your area. Around here for a $400.00 you can get a car stripped. It is safe for your car unlike sandblasting which can distroy a car, right NOW . So don't think of that, this plastic media blasting is really neat and is the hot way to strip a car. Call around, you may find someone nearby.
