I was looking into a 9 inch rear. I'm pricing the housing without them and getting the axles\chunk from junk yard. About how much to shorten the axles or would I be better off getting new axles. Thanks,,,,

You will need a set of axles about 4 inches longer that what they will be after they are cut and resplined. The axles are turned down about 4 inches from the end, so all of that will have to be cut off first. If you need 31 splines then you will need a set of 31 spline axles to start with. The 28 spline axles are usually smaller and don't have enough material to make 31s out of them. There are 3 different bolt patterns on Ford axles, 4 1/2, 5 and 5 1/2. Somoetimes there is enough material on them to get another bolt pattern drilled, so keep that in mind.

You are looking at $110 to have them resplined and $60 to have the bolt pattern redrilled. Add $20 to that if the holes need to be pluged first. Resplined axles are weak. I easily broke a 31 spline Ford axles that had been cut and resplined. I've been running a set of Moser 31 spline axles since then with no more problems. A new set of axles is $415 with studs, bearings and retainer plates.
