I have a roof that is badly pitted from rust under a vinyl top. Contacted the POR-15 people and they said that you could put filler over POR-15. Anyone tried it?

I am putting a vinyl top back on it.

I'm doing it right now. Some say its not a good idea. I guess I'll know for sure how it works in a couple of years.....

One thing I've found about POR is that its like super teflon - nothing likes to stick directly to it. In preparation for doing mine, I scuffed the POR, then applied the POR tie-coat primer. I'm putting the filler over the tie-coat primer. Fingers crossed.

So far, the adhesion of the filler seems to be good.

Another option that's been suggested to me was to skip the POR, use a metal etch to deal with the rust, then use either a filler or a primer/filler to level up. It wasn't an option for me due to large holes rusted throught the roof.

I have been dong it for two years now with no bad side affects.
The way I do it is: Use the Metal ready (an etching soloution) and then clean with the Marine clean and then clean again with a paint prep such as Dupont Final kleen.
Then apply the POR15 and let set untill its just slightly tacky.
The trick is to apply the filler just as the POR is setting, just enough to drag on your finger.
You can also dust a coat of the primer you are using so it will chemically bond to the POR 15, let that dry, then skuff it and apply the filler.
Either way works just as well and I think gives you a better bond to the POR than skuffing after its dry.
I have parts of my car done with both methods, some over two years old with no problems.
BUT my car has not moved in over two years so I cant say what will happen when I roll her out into the real world?
But I also cant see anything happening then that would not have happend by now?
