Is there any way to fix rust just behind the rear tires other than bondo? It looks like this is one whole piece with main body on 1970 Chevelle Malibu. The previous owner just puddied it all up. I'm not really any kind of body or paint guy so I don't know. All help is appreciated!
Thanks

Ward,

If you want it done right, you can weld in patch panels and use body filler to finish it off. If you are not a body man, this job is best left to an expert or someone that has done it before. If you just use body filler over the rust, it will bubble back up.

There are many different types of patch panels available. Some will do around the wheel well, while some do just the lower area. Or you can go all the way and get a full quarter. Be smart when buying sheetmetal. Get the advice of people on this site, on what and where to buy them. Also as mentioned if you are no bodyman then let a pro do it for you. But also depending on where the rust is you will probably find that it has worked it way into other panels, like either the outter wheelhouse or the trunk pan filler. So my best advice is to guess how much it will take to fix it and triple it. That should get you close. That damn rust has a tendancy to get everywhere.

Before you make that decision do some investigation. My car looked great, there were two or three little blemishes on the car around the rear window lower corners and on the rear wings (rear quarter either side of the trunk lid over the tail lights). The rest of the car/quarters looked great. So I decided to just patch things in. As we started working on it we found all kinds of "bondo repairs" and prior patch work. In the end, if I had to do it over again, I'd repalce both quarters on the car. My point being; if there is rust/rot visible behind the wheels it is a good possibility that there is more under other patch work just waiting to bite you. Go over the car carefully, use a magnet or bondo finder, look down inside the trunk area in front of the wheels and up under the rear window to trunk lids area with a light and mirror to get an idea of what your really dealing with before you decide. If you really do have just rust behind the wheels there are patch panels for that area for sale through most of the suppliers.
