Where would the number for a piston most likely be located. It has been bored .030 on the top of the piston and it is a flat top, with two small directional valve reliefs. Just wanted to check on type be it cast, forged or hyper.

Gary,
By the description it is probably a cast piston. I have never seen a forged one with the 030 stamped in the top, at least not without a part number there too. Most cast pistons have the part numbers cast on the inside part of the skirt.

It will either be on the face of thecrown or on the back of the crown. Some cast pistons ,especially factory type won't have a #.But,I would almost bet that yours are on the bottom of the crown. As far as I know all ,Ross,JE,Manley,Probe,Howards and others have the part # Forged with the piston on the bottom of the crown.TRW's have them on the top of the crown. If they are still in the block, you can use an old toothbrush and some diesel fuel to clean one.If it's not vissable then it either doesn't have one or it's on the bottom.
The piston you described sounds like a performance one,"that is unless it's a Big Block," in that the valve reliefs are directional. But that doesn't mean it is Forged.
Hope this helps,Eric.

Well I'm sure BillK is correct. The only thing I could find under the crown was the letter N on one side of the piston and a backward P 9 backwrd P. Back to the summit book and the machine shop

Many years ago there was a 909P piston sold thru Nylen Products. It was a cast one for basic rebuilding. Might be the one?

Gary,
How about a picture ?

Billk: It may be a Clevite as it looks similar to thier TC2914 hyper on the Kragen Website. Nylen is now under Dynagear so I e-mailed them and Clevite.
The pistons are still in the motor but I will get a photo out tomorrow before the Super Bowl. The top of the piston has concentric rings from the center to the outer edge giving the piston a somewhat rough texture. You will see tomorrow. Thanks
