I think I might have just made a mistake on my rear LS1 swap. I ordered a complete Moser bolt in 12-bolt with the ford style ends designed to work with the stock drums. Of course I got a little ahead of myself before I had the diff and started working on the brakes. Since it is common knowledge that to use drum brakes with the ford ends you have to bore out the backing plate to slip over the bearings and LS1 brakes will bolt up to a stock housing I assumed I would have to bore out the disc backing plates the same way so I went ahead and did one of them. I am now realizing that when using the thick LS1 backing plates they must actually act as the bearing retainers rather than using the supplied retainers? The problem I see is the the backing plate is about 5/8" thick with the dust shield so the way it is now there would be about 1/2" of free play for the axle to slide out before the bearing hits the retainer plate. The other issue is that the bearing protrudes about 1/8" out of the housing end so I assume what needs to be done is an 1/8" deep counterbore machined into the back of the plate to allow the plate to seat fully on the axle tube flange? Looks like I will now need to find a new LS1 backing plate:mad:
