I had what may or may not be a brilliant idea for extra water damage protection for your nice, brand-new doorpanels. Spray a couple coats of maybe a clear something or ?? on there to protect them in case the watershields don't do such a great job. Did they ever?
What do you all think?

I would think that anything you spray on them would change how they look, making them shiny. Unless the watershields are not doing anything, the vinyl should repel the water pretty well to a piont.

Door panels are usually ruined from the inside, not the vinyl side. If the cars is gonna be out in the rain a lot, it might not be a bad idea to coat the back of the new door panels with something to slow down water absorption. I wouldn't want any sealer on the vinyl though.
In woodworking our rule is, whatever you spray on one side of the wood should be sprayed on the opposite side as well, to prevent warping, like table tops, cab doors, etc. The same could be said for door panels, if it's gonna be a daily driver.

I meant the inner side, not the vinyl side. Something to make the cardboard or whatever it is fairly impenetrable by water. :)

Sounds like a good idea to me. Coat of clear over the cardboard might make them last forever.
