on my 65 chevelle, the body mount braces in front of the gas tank have rusted out. I need to remove and replace them. I bought some new ones a while back. How did the factory attach the trunk floor to these braces, or vice versa? I can't seem to find any spot welds to grind out, but I am looking from the underside. Should I get an air chisel under a rusted corner and try to chisel it off. I want to save the trunk floor as it seems pretty good. I expect to save some of it by sandblasting. I do have all 3 replacement trunk floor pieces. Anyone with pictures of trunk braces being removed or just replaced?

I looked through my files to see if I had any pictures of my 65's trunk before I replaced it that would show the braces and I didn't. My floors were bad enough that I just cut the braces out with the old floor. I do remember that the braces were spot welded to the floor from the factory. When replacing the new braces I used a bolt up through the proper body mount hole to locate them and then used old spray paint to outline them on the new pans. Later on with the body off the frame it was a snap to set the new braces within the outline and weld them in place. Have a good one!

They were spot welded. Easiest way to install new braces is to clean floor on top, locate all spot welds, center punch from top, drill out each spot weld. If you take your time, locate all welds, drill bit should be size of weld, drill all the way through floor and brace, the brace will almost fall off car. Then you can clean and apply self etch, or epoxy primer to underside of floor, and channel part of brace. On brace leave flange to be welded free of epoxy and spray with weld thru primer on flange. This way the majority of your welds will be from top through floor, all weld locations are already there, and few if any holes need to be located, drilled and welded from under car. Brace will have nice appearance from underside, floor can be ground and finished nicely. Your existing floor will have to be solid, with little or no corrosion in weld areas. Hope this helps, Karl

thanks for the info. I will remove paint from the trunk floor and find the spot welds, then drill them out.
