: lets see some pics of 66/67 with big wheels
gearheads78 Feb 2nd, 07, 11:21 AM I have a new project to work on. Its a 66 Cutlass convertible. I am in process of deciding a wheel combo. I am trying to compile as many pics of 66/67 a-bodys with 17/17 ,17/18, 18/18, and 18/20 combo's. I only want to see one if you are sure of the wheel combo. Tire size is a plus if you have that too.
Thanks
FancyBoy Feb 2nd, 07, 1:29 PM I will be purchasing a set of powder coated 16" wheels which will either be "steelies" with dog dish caps or ralley's without trim rings..I still haven't decided.
I will be posting some pictures in about 6 to 8 months from now.
My tendency is to opt for the dog dish wheels because I think they will expound on the bench seat-4 speed combo quite well.
I see excessively large wheels (anything over 16") as a passing fad, especially the more disproportionate sizes, but it currently seems to be acceptable to some palates because they promote a whole different theme.
Its similar to how home decorators view a style referred to as "eclectic". This style 'currently' works because it is the contrast (of elements) itself that is the theme.
I believe that as time progresses, this will pass and the refined acceptable choice will settle down to 16" for larger cars and 15" for compacts, with few diehards possessing the "wild" disposition for 17" and 16" respectively.
You can chisel that on your walls..I have spoken.

I agree on the idea, but not the sizes... I think 17's will be around for along time... First, seems to be many more tire choices for 17s compared to 16s, with 16s seeming fading away...
Even OEMs have "embraced" 17s on many "standard" vehicles... I have spoken...:p

You're certainly entitled to your opinion but I don't agree.
Here's mine. 15" wheels have been dead on performance cars for over 20 years so the larger wheel sizes hardly qualify as a "passing fad". Wheel diameters are getting larger, not smaller. Expect this to continue into the future. As for 16" sizings, they are the "redheaded stepchild" of the tire world and will probably continue to decline in popularity.
FancyBoy Feb 2nd, 07, 2:54 PM That is 'currently' the case with the 16" tire market, but it will only change as tastes do.
Incidentally, I have a set of 16" ralleys on my truck (16x10 & 16x8) and BF Goodrich has a complete line of 16" T/A radials that I purchase for them.

Well,it has "currently" been that case for twenty years with very little change.
16" truck tire selection isn't too bad, right now,but 16" passenger car selection leaves an awful lot to be desired. Honestly,I wish that selection was better. However,if you want Ultra High Performance street rubber,it's practically non-existent in 15" & 16" sizings. As stubborn as musclecar owners are to change sometimes, you would think a tire manufacturer would tool up and make some. However, the price would probably scare off all but the hardcore.

I aggree with you also but not on the sizes. The 22", 24" 26" exc will go away as a fad in a few years but 17/18 on cars and 20 in trucks will be the norm. This post is not about a debate of big wheel / little wheel. I need at least 17" for brakes that I plan. i just want to see some examples of those year cars. Dropped with big wheels keep them comming :D

The T/A radials on my truck are passenger (or truck) tires. As for "ultra-performance" tires, I believe I came across a few different manufacturers which I avoided because of the limited profiles and stiff sidewalls.
I believe Goodyear Eagles was one of them.

66ElkyBB Feb 10th, 07, 11:07 PM All four wheels on my Elky are 5 1/4 inch back space. I like them tucked in a bit, so went for more backspacing from ARE because I was going with the chrome center sections which made them "special order" and that includes any backspacing you want for no extra cost. I am sure that as little as the standard 4 3/4 BS would probably be fine also.

What are you running out back for tire? 255/50 ??
gearheads78 Feb 11th, 08, 12:19 AM Bringing this thread back from the dead. I am very close to pulling the trigger on wheels for the Cutlass. I am still not 100% certain on sizes. I think 18/18 is going to win I have ruled 20's out but still might do a 18/19 or 17/18 combo but the more pics the better. Please include tire size if you know it. I had rulled out stagged sizes until I saw this car. Its 18/17
http://www.deadzoom.com/member/gearheads78/IM000105small.JPG
The WidowMaker Feb 11th, 08, 1:38 AM my opinion, do 18's all around, or stagger them with 19's or 20's. 17's are ok, but i like the 18's better. 20's look way too big on some cars, but the chevelles are friggin boats. i think the larger wheels help make the car look smaller. nothing larger than an 18 on the front though. that is one sweet car and that back tire looks really tall (305/45/18??)
Tim
pist0lpete Feb 11th, 08, 2:34 PM Sorry for the delayed response but yes those are 255/50s on the rear of my 67. I would recommend 18s all around I like the look. I will probably rethink my whole setup and go with a bit larger tire up front as well I believe they are 225/35s. right now. I think some 275/30s up front and some 295/30s out back would be perfect. 18s seem to have a bit better tire selection in the wider varieties as well.

DriverzInc Feb 13th, 08, 12:50 AM how much is the car lowered in the front and rear? what backspace are the wheels?
Car is lowered 3" front and rear. Front backspace is a 4.875" and rears are a 6" backspace. Wheels and tires are my game, so I measured the offset myself, and am very happy they came out the way they did... fit is perfect. No rubbing, and just enough clearance for suspension travel, and cornering. The car has Global West tubular arms and KYB shocks. I plan on upgrading to single adjustable Varishocks to better dial in everything.

is the rear end housing a 66 housing or possibly a 68-72 chevelle housing?

They are Rushforth Wheels. www.rushforthwheels.com (http://www.rushforthwheels.com).
I Brushed the center and then clear powder coated it. I left the outer polished. They retail for 662.50ea in 19" and 20".
Tires were roughly 800 bucks for the set and are Sumitomo HTRZ III's.

No, it's a correct 66 housing. Not the 1" difference later housing.

Car looks good but not enough tire for what I want. Does make me want to think more serious about a 18/19 combo. Your stance is about what my car will look like. You you have any more pics from the side that are not so close up?

In an 18x9, yes, you could go one inch more backspace and be okay. I'd run a 265/ on that 9" then. Good to catch up with you on this forum MarkM ;)
gearheads78: I just took some photos this morning of the car outside the shop, and they are from further back. I will post them tonite when I get home.

That's the nice thing about AirRide. You can set it down at a show and have it look killer. And, it peforms pretty well when set up correctly. Thanks for the compliments on my ride. I'd like to get the nose down another inch, but it's already hard getting in and out of the driveway at the shop. :(

How much trimming did you do to fit the rears. I've got a junk one off a Z06 and that thing is huge.

The outer is rolled, with about a 1/2 inch between the tire and the fender.

front rubs alittle on u-turns, the rear fenders are rolled, and no rubbing at all. The wheels are American Racing Torq Thrust 2's.

This 66 has 15x10 Centerlines with 295/50x15 Cooper Cobra tires for street driving (signature picture the tires are MT 28x10.5 slicks on the 15x10 rims).
It works because of using a Ford 9 inch which is a bit narrower than the original 12 bolt.

Your car is so absolutely stunning and I realize its completely a personal choice, but I question the choice of wheels. The C6 wheel is a nice wheel on a Corvette, but they don't have enough "depth" or detail to really compliment your car or its color IMO.
Was there a ton of work to get them to fit?

The Blitz were a long shot. At the end of the day the fitment just wasn't right and I wasn't happy with the look. They were good rollers for a while though. The Roja Formula 7 wheels I have on there now clears the brakes much better and gives me some semblance of a lip. I just need more meat in the tires...

I know this was an old post, but I love the stance of your car. It sets exactly how I would like mine to sit. I had to ask you what you did as far as suspension goes? How much is it lowered? As far as the wheels go, would you get the 4.5" backspacing for the front? And the rear wheels, since mine is a stock 66 10-bolt rear end should I consider a bit more backspacing?
Thanks,
Jody
