: Under Dash Stereo Housing Pic?

I've been considering putting my stereo under my seat or in the glove box or under the dash. I will not cut the glove box or dash and I have seen some under dash stereo housings for sale and wondered if anyone has used them and hopefully could share some insights and photos!

My car is a 70 SS and the deck is a Pioneer DEH-4600MP AM/FM/CD/MP3 player. It also has connections for XM radio and a mini 3.5mm port for portable mp3 player input. I also have a Pioneer 12 disc changer which I may or may not use. I currently don't have an amp, but if I add one it would probably go under the front bench.

I've been searching and reading the various threads on here regarding the other options and am specifically interested in under dash photos in this post.

Thanks,
Don

Any thoughts or experience with this kind of setup, even if you don't have photos?

Thanks,

Heres a couple pics of my setup, i like it lets you not ruin your dash and keep the original radio for the original look :D

I have my stereo mounted in a setup like that.I did not want to cut up my dash, after all the thing had survived since 1971 without being cut up.So I went to a stereo shop and bought an under dash housing.I mounted it just slightly off center so the ash tray wouldn't be ruined or drilled into. The mounting holes will need to be filled but no other damage has been done at this point. It has a taper that goes from the front to the back so it kind of blends up into the back of the dash bottom. Also mounting it offset meant I wouldn't bang my knuckles when I shifted into 1st or 3rd.:D I think that piece is available from just about any stereo shop.
Try crutchfields they probably have it mail order.I paid $10 cash .

I'm actually thinking about putting a marine Radio in the trunk and getting the wired remote for it....

friend of mine installed his stereo under the front seat, and the remote still works so you dont even see the stereo, and to add a finishing touch. He disected the stock am radio and hooked up the power wire from the original on off dial to power the cd player. Jim

You guys DID have to drill a few mounting holes in the dash though with your setups right? Did you also need an antenna extension cable?

Cool finishing touch!

I plan to keep my original radio in the car too, for looks.

I think I may go under the bench with it and use velcro to hold it in place. No modifications that way.

I understand these guys http://www.electronixwarehouse.com sell some kind of a repeater that can be used to ensure that the remote I have will continue to work even though the unit is out of site.

Off to do more reading....

There is a company in Blaine Minnesota that guts your AM radio and updates all the components inside. They get aprx. $350 with a pigtail for CD or Ipod input. Looks like a stock factory unit when done and has a highpower amp built in.

I saw your comment in another post about that. That's a cool option! In my case though I don't want to gut my original and I already have a newer AM/FM/CD/MP3 player I plan to use.

I just wrote Pioneer to find out if my remote uses a 40khz or 56khz carrier frequency (which the repeater requires).

I think this is the setup I will go with if it does, because I can hide the deck and still use my remote and it doesn't involve FM signals or anything like that. I also need to find what kind of cable setup is needed to run a seperate mp3 player off of the back of the new deck, when it is in AUX mode.

Thanks for the input so far!

I just found out Pioneer uses 44khz.

Suddenly this product may not be the savior.

I wrote Pac-Audio and they just told me that they have never had any problems with Pioneer remotes and their IP-X Repeater.

Anyone running this setup with a Pioneer?

Thanks,

There is a company, sorry dont know the name, that sells the tissue box dispenser. It is actually a housing to hold your radio and NOT tissues. I'm not sure if your car had that option though?

There are a couple companies that use an RF (radio frequence) remote, not infra-red (IR). Infrared units need to 'see' the sensor on the radio....RF units dont, they will work thru seats, walls, etc. Of course, it would require you buying a new head unit. Check with a reputable car stereo shop in your area for info. I have been out of the loop for awhile now. Also, Sony...and probably others...make a wired remote unit that you could hide somewhere, and work everything from the joystick remote. Something to think about.
