I have a couple of questions about my 6 year old laquer paint on my 70 ss 396.First off i have many coats of paint on the car and it was clear coated with ppg brand products.I probaly shoud have went with a base coat clear coat paint but i wanted the exact original at the time which was #58 autumn gold and it was only in laquer.I probaly should have just matched up to something close but anyway here is my question. The paint looks show quality a few feet away but at close looks you can see a lot of water marks,i think thats what they are even when the car has never seen water, and there is hand prints where you can see right down to the lines in the hands or palm ,and a couple of areas where i think you call it checking as happend. Can i help it by wet sanding and buffing ? Dont know much about laquer. The car is 99.9% bondo free ,smooth and no rust or bubbling in the paint.Any suggestions from someone with paint experience will be appreciated. Here is a picture.http://ohiochevelle.com/images/Henderson/cocobh.htm

I know exactly what you are looking at. I had a few paint jobs that I did do the same thing. I don't remember the details right now but I never figured out what caused it. I found that you could cut and rub it out, but it will return. How long it will take is anyones guess but it will.

What would suggest for a grit of sandpaper and finish buff product.Would like to do the least minimal damage just enough to make a difference.Thanks.

I hate to make a recommendation, I haven't worked with lac in so long. When I did I used 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000 grit paper and then 3M "Micro finishing" compound as I remember.
The very last lac job I did I was given some 15,000 grit paper, yes you read it right, 15,000 grit. It is used in polishing windows in airplanes. It was increadible, kind of like polish it's self. I wish I could get more.
