: trunk pan hacking update
Andy69 Feb 1st, 07, 12:23 AM Just a little update on my progress. By the time I got the bad metal out, I had it all the way around to the rear seat pan. I started there and I'm working my way to the back, so technically I'm still on those floors :clonk: The last two pictures are my forst attempt at butt welding. I used some speaker magnets to hold the panels in place.

1badss396 Feb 1st, 07, 12:33 AM Looks like fun Andy..
I just thought of something you could have done while you were replacing all the floors and trunk in the car.. You could have painted your frame at the same time, hehe
Redmanf1 Feb 1st, 07, 1:04 AM Nice work:thumbsup:
rubadub Feb 1st, 07, 1:23 AM Really nice pictures, good job of welding, looking good, thanks for taking the time to show us this.
ps. If all of it doesn't fit when you close the ends in, you can always suffocate your self with that plastic.:p
Seriously here, after doing that work you just did, then taking the time to take the pictures and put them on here, thats what this forum is all about, good job:beers:

350_Malibu Feb 1st, 07, 9:47 AM Looks good Andy. Your rear seat panel patches look great, mine looked like crap compared to yours, Good job!
rubadub Feb 1st, 07, 11:07 AM Nice try
Who did you bring in to get those nice flat welds? I also see how you just kind of let us get a glimpse of that lincoln, wheres the real welder and who is the weldee?
Tell him I would like to use him also, oh, but tell him I've got the right welder up here allready, and it aint no (stinkin lincoln)
You might be able to get this by these youngsters, but not this old man.
I was just thinking
Or do the chevelles have thicker metal down south, you know, I'll bet they do, because of the heat, otherwise they'l warp.:)
I might be doing something wrong, my neighbor said my welds look like cockle-burrs:mad:
lev8trmn Feb 1st, 07, 11:43 AM Nice pictures Andy. I'm taking notes! Hope mine looks similar when I'm done. I'll only post pictures if it turned out good. :-)

Its Andy.. you know he did some grinding on that patch and got the welds all nice and neat and THEN went back and added a few tacks so it looked like he didn't grind on it. :D
Andy I think 3 months ago we where at the same place in our restos.. you've pulled ahead of me. I really need to order my center brace so I can finish up my floor pans, or you'll be driving before I even have my floors done.
1969 Chevelle Dude Feb 1st, 07, 11:49 AM I'm doing the same thing to my 64 Impala. Lots bad metal.
ss1970chev454 Feb 1st, 07, 12:59 PM Andy69,
looks good.
If I might add a suggestion.
Cut the existing trunk pan to over top of the first flange of the gas tank brace. Use a cut off wheel and cut through the trunk metal but not the brace. The new pan will rest half way on the brace. This does a couple of things. Hides the repair from below and gives you something else to weld to. As I recall this seam should fall in one of the low dips of the pan.
I hope this makes sense. I didn't want to over explain it.
Greg
Andy69 Feb 1st, 07, 3:46 PM Thanks for the kind words guys. I think the pictures hide stuff, you know like a car on Ebay :)
Greg that's a great idea, I hadn't thought of that. I'm going ot use that. I was trying to decide where to put the seam.
ss1970chev454 Feb 1st, 07, 7:07 PM I've done it a few times. It's great when you don't have to relpace the center section.
Glad I could help. That's what it's all about:thumbsup:

Awe C'mon Rob, nothing wrong with a lincoln if you know how to use it! Like learning to ride a bike or dance the macarena or walk the tight rope or making the wife happy... It just takes practice, you never get it right the first time (mostly with the wife). In fact, I can make better welds with my 110V lincoln then I can with my father-in-laws big miller matic (think thats what it's called). Just the difference in welders i guess... I think it's more what your used too. But, then again if I had a month with a good welder I'd prolly burn my lincoln or run it over with my truck just for something to do:yes:
rubadub Feb 1st, 07, 11:35 PM I've been learning how to weld for 50 years, its a good thing they make grinders.

what's a "grinder"? Is that some extra piece of welding equipment? I might have to get me one of those, if I knew what I was supposed to do with it :)
rubadub Feb 1st, 07, 11:58 PM Its another word for a sub sandwich, you cone.:D
rubadub Feb 2nd, 07, 12:17 AM I can hear the wheels turning, he always has a good comeback, it just takes him a while:boring: , maybe he asks the wife to help him out.

Sometimes I'm out in the garage, making pretty welds. Haven't got time to monkey around. :)
I gotta keep on my toes, these guys from Tennessee, they don't monkey around
rubadub Feb 2nd, 07, 2:23 AM He went to bed, another case of the youngsters can't keep up with the old guys.:)
