My 68 ss origionally had a thin double pinstripe right below the door handle and runing the length of the car. I have talked to the origional owner and he said it was that way when he bought it new.The only stripe option I found is the one that runs across the nose and down the side.I thought it might have been dealer installed untill I was looking at the chevelle byers guide and on page 82 it shows a 68ss with the same pinstripe.Does anyone know anything about this?Did chevy produce some of these cars with this stripe? The car was painted about 12 years ago and the guy that painted it remembers sanding it off so it was a painted on pinstripe. My car was made in late 67 if that makes a difference. Thanks Bill.

If I'm reading it right....the pinstripe you're talking about thats right under the door handle is for a 69 ss. The one that runs along the nose and along the rocker panel is for the 68 ss. Take a look at some pinstriped 69's to see if it's the same.

That double pinstripe you are talking about was standard on the '68 SS396 Chevelles and Malibus. It rarely get put on a car after a repaint.
The pinstripe was deleted if the optional D96 striping was specified. The D96 stripe was the broad stripe that runs across the header panel and drapes down low on the leading edge of the front fender, then continues back after the wheel opening just above the lower side chrome. It continued behind the rear wheel opening to the lower edge of the rear bumper.

Thanks Cam.Im trying to deciede if I should put the pinstripe back on when I repaint or if I should put the D96 stripe on it.Now that I know the pinstripe did come from the factory Im thinking I'll put it back on.
