I am in the process of.... hmm, how to put it... unscrewing this screwed up chevelle. My problem is a lot of bolts put in were metric and not standard and I have no idea if the bolts are correct or even if the hole that is there is suppposed to be. I have a hole in the fire wall that looks like a hatchet went through. Small and fixable. What do you guys reccomend to take care of this? Any good manuals that will tell me what bolts and a description of them goes where? I am also looking into this to restore that care to a certain level while also putty mods on where I see fit without taking away from the SS appearance.

All the repro places have complete bolt kits.
I haven't opened mine yet so I can't say how good they are.

I bought a complete bolt/screw kit for my 69 chevelle 3 years ago from OPGI. The interior screw were great and marked what screw goes where, The fender bolts looked good but cheap. I broke 3 of the inner fender well boughts.

So there are no books out there that state what type of parts? The main reason I want to know these is in some cases to get special bolts

The assembly manuals will show the part # for the bolts and nuts, but will not have any other info like size, thread pitch, or length. Since these part #s have changed many times over the years, they are almost impossible to find by the original #. Ground Up offers individual bolts for applications, so if you're looking for something like rear control arm bolts, you can get them. Good luck. ;)

I am quite surprised that there aren't any specific guides like that. So it seems that kits are going to be the best. With that in mind what is the best in your opinion that stands up to rust and still has high strength. Rust is a major for all exterior bolts.

A good investment would be an assembly manuel. My 66 was in boxes when i got it, been my best investment.

+1

another +1 on the amk kits. they are all bagged and marked.

If you looking to buy custom bolts for the frame, I can probably help there. I bought all custom grade 8 zinc coated and armor coat bolts for every suspension bolt and assembly point I could on the frame. Many of the suspension and brake parts I purchased came with bolts, so I just used the supplied bolts, but I can still get the sizes if you need to know one! Private message me a list of what you want and I'll fill in the blanks.

If you looking for body bolts, I'd just go with the kits.. cheaper in the long run.

Good luck.

Give Hinshaw's Chevelle a call. James has bolt kits with the correct markings and plating for the body, suspension, engine, etc. I don't remember if the company that makes them is AMK, but it is the nicest I've seen next to original.

I believe that kit is from AMK. I think all the aftermarket houses sell AMK kits.

Thanks Freddy. It has been awhile since I had my hands on one of those kits. It is hard to remember all the manufacter names, so many repo parts and all.

What are the advantages to using galvanized bolts? I have seem many types like chrome, steel, and galvanized. Can someone let me know what the advantages and disadvantages to all these bolts are? Thanks
