I am having a problem removing hte fenders from my 72. Both fenders were damaged and I got GM replacments. The bolts on the front of the fender are hidden by the fender extension. How much removing of the rest of the front end do I have to do? Do I need to remove the Bumber? Im looking for the simplest solution to removal and replacement of the fenders....thanks guys

The fender extensions do have to be pulled as they bolt to the fender. The extensions are only held by a couple of nuts from the inside. There should also be a bolt under the front of the fender by the core support/inner shield that needs to be removed. The fender can be puller with the inner shield intact.
Other than the hood being pulled I can't think of anything else other than the brace that runs from the bottom of the fender to the core support.
Hope I remembered correctly and it helps.

I believe 71 and 72 are the same in this regard. If I remember correctly, there is a bolt holding the "extension" on that is hidden by the bumper. Last time I took that part off, I had to at least remove two of the bumper bolts and let it swing down to gain access to the last bolt.
To remove the fender, you'll probably need to remove the grille, bumper, extension, the two bolts at the lower portion of the inner fender well and those along the core support.

Thanks guys, It was a lot easier than I was trying to make it. There were indeed two nuts, and two bolts holding the fender extension on. Once I took those out, I could pull it out of the way far enough to reach the remainder of the fender bolts. I did not need to completely remove the extensions...or the bumper to remove and replace the fenders. I was able to remove them both and replace them both within about 5 hours....
Thanks again,

What do the fender extensions look like? My fenders and inner fenders were already off when I got the car so I don't know if I need them. The fenders were off because they needed to be replaced.
Thanks,

The fender extensions are the pieces that connect to the front of the fender on 70-72 models. The turn signals (on 71-72) and headlights then are a part of the extensions. These pieces are easy to find if you need them. You can do a search on e-bay or find someone parting one out. People usually don't ask too much for them. Hope that helped.

Thanks. I guess I do have turn signals and headlights. I just thought it had more to do with the fender though. Have you ever seen a light on the fenders before? What are those for?

You must have a 70 malibu (guessing here) On the 70's, the turn signals were on the lower front portion of the fender and the bumpers. on the 71-72...the turn signals were on the fender extensions.

I have the turn signals on the extension. I just wondered what years had light fixtures on the fenders. I think the one in Dazed and Confused has that fixture there.
